Which Toyotas come with CarPlay as standard?

Toyota was late to smartphone integration. For years it backed its own system (Toyota Touch, Touch 2, Touch 2 with Go) with in-house navigation and a closed list of apps. In short:

  • Factory radios with CD and a monochrome display (Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Avensis, Verso, older RAV4 generations): no CarPlay, no Android Auto and no upgrade path.
  • Toyota Touch and Touch 2: a small touchscreen, a reversing camera and little else. Neither CarPlay nor Android Auto.
  • Touch 2 with Go: adds in-house navigation with paid maps that have to be renewed at the dealer. Still no smartphone integration.
  • Toyota Smart Connect and more recent systems: these do include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wirelessly on the latest units.

The practical conclusion is simple: unless your Toyota is one of the most recent ones, you will not be able to add CarPlay with a software update. It takes hardware.

Depending on how the screen is integrated into your dashboard, there are two different routes:

  • Model-specific screen head unit (full replacement). This is the option for most Toyotas, where the infotainment unit sits in its own slot in the console: Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Avensis, RAV4, Verso, Prius, Land Cruiser, Hilux, Aygo and so on. The original radio comes out and an Android screen with a model-specific fascia goes in. You gain screen size, a full Android system, a camera input and audio outputs.
  • CarPlay interface (the original screen stays). This is the option for Toyotas with a Touch 2 screen built into the dashboard, where replacing it would spoil the design. Nothing visible changes: a hidden module is fitted that injects CarPlay and Android Auto into the factory screen, still operated with the original touchscreen and controls.

In every case it is a plug & play installation: no original wiring is cut and the process is reversible. The general steps are:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the console trim using plastic tools. On many Toyotas the radio surround is joined to the climate control panel and comes off in one piece, so it is best to release the clips starting from the bottom.
  3. Take out the original radio by removing the usual four screws and pulling it towards you carefully.
  4. Connect the harness and the CAN Bus decoder, which is what keeps the steering wheel controls and the trip computer information working.
  5. Check the sound system. If your car has a JBL system with an amplifier (common on the Avensis, RAV4, Land Cruiser and higher Auris trims), the matching adapter is needed so you don't lose any speakers. Worth confirming before buying.
  6. Fit the microphone near the rear-view mirror, route the cable through the A-pillar trim, seat the screen and reconnect the battery.

On models with an interface the process is even simpler, because the module is spliced into the original screen connector and stays hidden behind the dashboard.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Toyota?

Through official channels it effectively doesn't exist: Toyota does not offer a CarPlay retrofit for the Touch and Touch 2 systems. What the dealer will offer you is a map update for the navigation system, an expense that comes round every few years and stops making sense the moment you use Google Maps or Waze from your phone.
