The Toyota Verso (2009-2018) was for years the logical choice for families who wanted seven seats without giving up Toyota reliability. Roomy, with fold-flat rear seats and 1.6 D-4D and 1.8 Valvematic engines that take whatever you throw at them, it is still very much alive on the used market.
Its unfinished business is the infotainment. Neither the basic radio nor the Toyota Touch fitted to higher trims offers Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and their maps have gone years without an update. In a car built for long trips and for carrying children in the back, having a decent screen with real-time navigation, music and hands-free calling makes an enormous difference.
Does the Toyota Verso have CarPlay as standard?
No. No Verso left the factory with CarPlay or Android Auto. Depending on the trim and the year, your car may have:
- Radio-CD with monochrome display: Bluetooth for calls on better-equipped versions, and little more.
- Toyota Touch: a small touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB and rear camera, without navigation.
- Toyota Touch & Go: the above plus built-in navigation and connected services, with maps that are now out of date.
None of those systems accepts an update that adds CarPlay: it is a hardware limitation, not a software one. Toyota did not offer a retrofit for this generation either, so the only route is to replace the original unit.

- Original series 2009-2012 and facelift 2013-2018.
- 5 and 7 seat versions.
- 1.6 and 1.8 Valvematic petrol and 1.6 and 2.0 D-4D diesel engines, with manual or Multidrive S transmission.
- Trims with the basic radio, with Toyota Touch and with Toyota Touch & Go.
If your Verso has the original reversing camera or parking sensors, they are kept: the camera plugs into the video input of the new screen and the sensors keep warning you as before. For the Corolla Verso (2004-2009), which is the previous generation, we have a different reference.

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
- Remove the centre dashboard trim, held by push clips.
- Undo the screws on the original unit and pull it out carefully.
- Unplug the factory connectors, the aerial and, if fitted, the rear camera.
- Connect the harness with CAN Bus decoder included: it keeps the steering wheel controls, the vehicle information and switching on with the ignition.
- Run the external microphone to the A-pillar and the GPS aerial to the base of the windscreen.
- Fit the screen with its fascia, screw it in and reconnect the battery.
- Start up, pair your phone over Bluetooth and let CarPlay or Android Auto set themselves up.

Can I play videos for the children in the back?
The screen plays video with the car parked and lets you install apps from Google Play. While driving the image is blocked for safety, but the sound keeps coming through the speakers.
Will I lose the original reversing camera?
No. It plugs into the video input of the new screen and still comes on by itself when you select reverse, with better image quality.
Do I keep the steering wheel controls?
Yes. The CAN Bus decoder included keeps volume, track change, phone and mode.
My Verso has Toyota Touch & Go with navigation. Is it worth changing?
Yes. You lose the factory navigation, but you gain Google Maps and Waze with real-time traffic, which today are far better and cost nothing to update.
Does CarPlay work without a cable?
Yes, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work wirelessly. You can also use USB if you prefer your phone to charge during the trip.
