The third-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA30) is one of those cars people do not sell: they hand it down. 2.2 D-4D engines that pass 300,000 km without drama, available all-wheel drive, a huge boot and a reputation for reliability across Spain. It is the SUV that is still doing its job ten or fifteen years on.

Its weak point, as with almost every Toyota from that era, is the multimedia system. The RAV4 XA30's factory radio was designed before the idea of "putting your phone on the screen" existed. No CarPlay, no Android Auto and no navigation worth using. The fix is simple and does not involve changing cars: a model-specific Android head unit for the RAV4 that fits the original slot and gives the dashboard another twenty years of life.

Does the Toyota RAV4 XA30 have CarPlay as standard?

No. No version of this RAV4 generation left the factory with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Toyota only added those functions much later, with the Toyota Touch 2 system on newer models. What you may find in your RAV4 is:

• Basic 1 DIN or 2 DIN CD radio, with a segment display and, at best, an AUX input.
• CD radio with a 6-disc changer on better-equipped trims.
• First-wave Toyota Touch on the last units: small resistive screen, slow menus and optional SD-card navigation that is no longer updated.
• Bluetooth for calls only on some versions, using old profiles that cause trouble with current phones.

The result is the usual workaround: phone holder stuck to the windscreen, cable dangling towards the cigarette lighter and sound coming out of the handset or an FM transmitter with more noise than music.

This unit is designed for the third-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA30) in its 2007-2011 phase, both before and after the facelift. It fits:

What is the installation like?

The RAV4 XA30 is one of the easiest cars for this kind of job. Everything is plug & play: the original connectors are used and no vehicle wire is cut, so you can go back whenever you want.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes.
2. Remove the centre console trim. On the RAV4 it is clipped in place; plastic pry tools take it off without breaking anything.
3. Undo the four screws holding the original radio and pull it out carefully.
4. Connect the supplied harness. The car's connectors plug in directly. This is also where the CAN Bus module goes, translating the vehicle's signals: steering wheel controls, lighting, reverse gear and alerts.
5. Position the microphone and GPS aerial. Microphone next to the mirror; GPS aerial on the dashboard, facing the windscreen.
6. Test before closing up: sound, touch response, steering wheel controls, phone pairing and the reversing camera if you fit one.
7. Slot the unit in and refit the trim.

Most people get it done in 40-60 minutes with a screwdriver and a set of plastic pry tools. At a workshop it is an hour of labour.

Toyota's official network has no CarPlay retrofit for the XA30: the system is simply too old to update. What car audio shops usually offer instead is a well-known aftermarket unit plus fascia adapter, harness and labour, and there the quote easily reaches -800.

Frequently asked questions

Do the RAV4 steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus module handles that: volume, track change, calls and mute respond just as before. If a button does not respond at first, you can reassign it from the settings menu in a minute.

My RAV4 has the original Toyota Touch. Can it be replaced?
Yes. The Android head unit takes that same slot. You swap a slow resistive screen for a capacitive HD one, and SD-card navigation for Google Maps or Waze with live traffic.

Will I lose the JBL sound if my car has it?
No. The JBL amplifier keeps working as long as it is connected with the right adapter. On top of that, the Android head unit's equaliser lets you fine-tune the sound far more precisely than the original system.

Can I fit a reversing camera?
Yes, and on this car it is especially recommended: the spare wheel on the tailgate cuts visibility significantly. The unit has a camera input and switches over automatically when you select reverse.

Does it drain the battery when the car is parked?
Not noticeably. The head unit switches off with the ignition, just like the original, and goes into standby with minimal consumption. If the car will sit for weeks, the advice is the same as with any radio: disconnect the terminal or use a battery maintainer.
