Along with BMW, Mercedes-Benz is the brand we get the most enquiries about. And it makes sense: there are a huge number of W204, W211, W212, ML W164 and Vito models still on the road with many years ahead of them, cars that remain excellent except for one detail: their infotainment system has been left behind.
The catch is that "fitting CarPlay to a Mercedes" does not mean the same thing on every model. Depending on whether your car has Audio 20, COMAND NTG or a simple radio, the right solution is different. This guide sorts that information out model by model so you know exactly what your car needs before buying anything.
Which Mercedes come with CarPlay as standard?
Mercedes began offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from the factory with the arrival of COMAND Online NTG5.x and, above all, MBUX. Everything before that was left out:
- Older Audio 10 / Audio 20 radios: no CarPlay, and no way to add it through a software update.
- COMAND NTG2, NTG2.5, NTG3 and NTG4: DVD or hard-drive navigation with paid maps. No CarPlay or Android Auto.
- COMAND NTG4.5 / NTG5: a more modern interface, but CarPlay only arrived as an option on very specific, late cars.
- NTG6 / MBUX: already integrates CarPlay and Android Auto, although on many cars it came deactivated from the factory because the first owner did not tick that option.
The practical conclusion: if your Mercedes is more than a few years old, you will not be able to add CarPlay through software. Hardware is required.

- Model-specific screen radio (full replacement). This is the option for models where the infotainment unit sits in its own console opening: W203, W204, W211, W212, ML W164, Viano/Vito, Sprinter, Smart and so on. The original unit is removed and an Android screen with a model-specific frame is fitted. You gain a bigger screen, full Android, camera input and RCA outputs.
- CarPlay interface (the original screen is kept). This is the option for Mercedes models with a screen built into the dashboard that cannot be replaced without ruining the design, such as the A-Class W177, CLA, GLA and GLB with NTG6. Nothing visible changes here: a hidden module is fitted that injects CarPlay and Android Auto into the factory screen, and you keep using the original rotary controller or touchpad.

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Remove the console trim with plastic tools, never levering with metal.
- Extract the original unit. On many older Mercedes you need extraction keys, the U-shaped type, which are included with the unit.
- Connect the harness and the CAN Bus decoder, which is what keeps the steering wheel controls and trip computer information working.
- Check the sound system. This is the critical point on a Mercedes: if your car has a fibre optic amplifier (common on ML, GL, R-Class and Harman Kardon systems), you need a fibre optic decoder so you do not lose the speakers. It is a separate part and worth confirming before you buy.
- Fit the microphone, slot in the screen and reconnect the battery.
On models using an interface the process is even simpler, because the module plugs in between the original screen connector and the screen, and stays hidden behind the dashboard.
How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Mercedes?
At the dealer, a CarPlay retrofit for pre-NTG6 models is simply not offered. What they will offer is a COMAND map update, an expense that repeats every few years and stops making sense the moment you use Google Maps or Waze from your phone.

It is the first thing to check. It is usually associated with premium sound systems and models such as the ML, GL, R-Class or S-Class. Send us your VIN and we will confirm it and tell you whether you need the decoder.
Do I lose the steering wheel controls?

My Mercedes has NTG6 but CarPlay is deactivated. What do I need?
In that case the solution is an interface, not a new radio: it keeps your original screen and adds CarPlay and Android Auto without touching the dashboard.
Can the car be put back to how it was?
Yes. Since no wires are cut, keeping the original unit lets you reverse the installation whenever you want.
Is a universal radio as good as a model-specific one?
It can be fitted, but it shows: frames that do not line up, visible gaps and lost car functions. On a Mercedes, where the interior is a big part of the value, it is not worth it.
