CarPlay Screen Radio for the Suzuki Alto Mk7 (2009-2014): How to Install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Suzuki Alto Mk7 GF HA25 2009-2014 - CarPlay and Android Auto Screen Radio

The seventh-generation Suzuki Alto was for years one of the most practical cars you could buy: under 3.5 metres long, a three-cylinder 1.0 that barely drinks, cheap servicing and a reliability record that still keeps it going as a first car or a second city car in many households. What it did not have was equipment: the Alto was sold with the bare essentials, and the audio system is the clearest example. If you use it around town with your phone on your lap or stuck to the windscreen on a suction mount, a model-specific screen radio for the Alto Mk7 is probably the most useful upgrade you can give the car.

Does the Suzuki Alto Mk7 have CarPlay as standard?

No, in any version. The Alto Mk7 left the factory with a single-slot radio (1-DIN format) with CD and a single-line display. Depending on the trim and the year it could have an auxiliary input or USB, but:

  • There is no colour or touch screen of any kind.
  • There is no built-in navigation, not even as an option.
  • Bluetooth hands-free was not available on most cars sold in Europe.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto did not exist as an option when this car was built.

Suzuki offers no update to add it, so the only way to have CarPlay in an Alto is to replace the radio with a screen designed for its dashboard.

The solution: an Android screen radio for the Suzuki Alto Mk7

The screen radio for the Alto Mk7 comes with the frame specific to this dashboard, which uses the original radio aperture and the console area to hold an HD touchscreen far larger than the factory display. Here is what it adds:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects by itself at start-up, with no suction mounts and no cables across the dashboard.
  • GPS navigation with its own aerial, compatible with Google Maps and Waze, which is very handy in a city car.
  • Bluetooth with hands-free calling and music streaming, something the Alto never had.
  • FM radio and playback over USB, Bluetooth and Spotify.
  • Two USB ports for charging the phone or playing from a memory stick.
  • A free reversing camera, which switches on by itself when you select reverse: the Alto never had one as standard and in a tight parking space it is very welcome.
  • Plug & play installation, with no cutting or splicing of the car’s wiring.
  • Three memory configurations: 1 GB + 16 GB, 2 GB + 32 GB or 4 GB + 64 GB.

For a city car, the 1 GB version is plenty if all you want is CarPlay and music. If you also plan to keep navigation open the whole time plus another app or two, the 2 GB RAM version has more headroom.

Suzuki Alto Mk7 compatibility: supported versions

The kit fits the seventh-generation Suzuki Alto (GF / HA25), from 2009 to 2014. Compatibility is determined by the shape of the dashboard and the radio connector, not by the engine, so it works for:

  • Versions with the three-cylinder 1.0 petrol engine, manual or automatic.
  • The GA, GL and GLX trims.
  • Three-door and five-door cars.
  • Cars with the basic CD radio, with or without an auxiliary input or USB.

One thing to bear in mind: the Alto Mk7 shares many parts with the Nissan Pixo, which is practically the same car with a different badge, so if you have a Pixo this may fit too. And do not confuse it with the previous Alto, which has a different dashboard. Before ordering, compare your console with the product photos; if you are unsure, send us a photo of your current radio on WhatsApp and we will confirm compatibility free of charge.

The Alto is a simple car and that shows here too: the whole front of the console is a push fit and comes apart in minutes.

  1. Release the centre console trim using plastic prising wedges and undo the screws holding the original radio.
  2. Plug the harness of the new screen into the factory connector, without cutting anything in the original loom.
  3. Connect the radio aerial, the GPS aerial, the USB ports and, if you fit it, the reversing camera cable run to the tailgate.
  4. Seat the screen in its specific frame and fix it to the dashboard.
  5. Pair the phone for CarPlay or Android Auto and check the sound in all the speakers.

At an automotive electronics workshop the job takes about an hour, a little longer if the camera cable is run. The kit includes a manual and, on a car with so little electronics, it is one of the easiest fits to do at home. If the FM sounds noisy afterwards, it is usually the aerial adapter: we explain it in our guide on why an Android radio does not pick up stations.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Suzuki Alto?

At the dealer there is no option at all: Suzuki never offered a radio with a screen for the Alto, so the only original spare part available is the same CD radio you already have. The usual alternative is a universal aftermarket head unit, but in such a compact car that means buying the adapter frame, the aerial adapter and the camera separately, and the finish almost never looks integrated.

The model-specific Alto Mk7 radio includes the made-to-measure frame, the harness, the GPS aerial and the reversing camera in the same box. Relative to what a car like this is worth, it is one of the upgrades with the best balance between price and everyday use. You can check the current price of each memory configuration on the product page.

Is a screen like this worth it in a small, cheap car?
This is exactly where it shows most. An Alto is used for short, constant city trips, and going from holding the phone in your hand to having Google Maps and music on a fixed screen completely changes the driving experience.

My Alto has no audio controls on the steering wheel. Is that a problem?
No. The screen is a touchscreen and works on its own. On cars that do have those controls, they can normally be kept; send us a photo of your steering wheel and we will confirm it before you buy.

Does it drain a lot of battery when the car is parked?
The radio switches off with the ignition, just like the original. If the car goes unused for weeks, the battery is worth checking as on any other car; we cover it in detail in our guide on why an Android radio drains the battery.

Does it also fit a Nissan Pixo?
In most cases yes, because the Pixo is the same car with another badge. Still check that your console matches the photos.

Can the factory radio be refitted?
Yes. As it is a plug & play fit, you simply unplug the harness and put the original radio back. Keep the old unit and the trim panel.
