The Android head unit picks up no radio stations: causes and the antenna adapter fix

It is one of the messages we get most often after an installation: "the screen works perfectly, CarPlay connects, the sound is better than before… but FM radio barely picks up two stations and they hiss". The good news is that it is almost never the new head unit's fault, and there is almost always a cheap, five-minute fix: the antenna adapter.

In this guide we go through why an Android head unit loses stations, how to identify which of the causes applies to you and which part you need in each case.

Why your Android head unit picks up no stations

In 90 % of cases the cause is one of these five:

• The original antenna is amplified and has lost its power supply. Many modern cars have a preamplifier in the antenna itself that needs 12 V. The factory radio provided it; the new one will not, unless you connect the right wire.
• The connector is not the same. The car may use FAKRA (the coloured clip connector of the VAG Group and many European brands), ISO, GT5 or DIN, while the new head unit almost always has a standard DIN input. Without the right adapter the connection is forced or simply does not make contact.
• The blue "Antenna Remote" wire is not connected. This is the most repeated mistake: that wire powers the antenna amplifier and, if left loose, reception collapses.
• The original antenna has degraded: corroded base, loose mast or a cable pinched during the installation.
• There is interference from a cheap USB charger, an inverter or a poorly shielded camera video cable routed alongside the antenna lead.

How to identify your case in two minutes

1. Look at the car's connector. If it is a rectangular coloured plastic clip (blue, violet, black), it is FAKRA and your antenna is almost certainly amplified.
2. Check the blue wire on the new head unit. If it is dangling behind the dashboard, that is your problem: it must go to a switched live feed or to the adapter's remote.
3. Do the strong station test. If you get a powerful local station but with noise and lose all the others, it is a lack of amplification, not a faulty radio.
4. Try with the engine off and running. If the noise only appears with the engine running, it points to power supply interference, not to the antenna.

The fix: an amplified antenna adapter

An amplified antenna adapter does three things at once: it adapts the car's connector to your new head unit's input, powers the original antenna's preamplifier and filters part of the electrical noise. It is a small part, it clicks into place and nothing has to be cut.

The installation is always the same: one end into the car's antenna connector, the other into the head unit's antenna input, and the blue wire to a switched live feed (or to the head unit's antenna remote wire). Without that blue wire the amplifier never starts and nothing changes.

If your car is a Volkswagen, SEAT or Škoda

VAG Group cars are by far the most common case. They use double FAKRA (one line for FM and another for DAB or GPS) and have a preamplifier, so reception drops off a cliff when you change the radio. For them there is a dedicated double FAKRA amplified antenna that connects without cutting the original cable and restores the reception of the factory system. It is compatible with, among others:

• Volkswagen: Golf 5, 6 and 7, Polo V, Passat B6, B7, B8 and CC, Touran, Tiguan, Jetta, Sharan, Amarok, T5 and T6, Touareg, Scirocco and EOS.
• SEAT: León II and III, Ibiza IV, Altea, Alhambra II and Toledo.
• Škoda: Octavia II and III, Fabia II, Superb II and III, Yeti and Rapid.

What about DAB radio?

Many adapters are advertised as "DAB" because they include the digital antenna line. It is worth being realistic: in Spain DAB+ coverage is very limited and concentrated in a few areas, so in practice you will still be listening to FM. The adapter is just as useful, because what it fixes is the amplification of the analogue signal; DAB is a bonus you will appreciate when travelling around Europe, where it is widespread.

Other tricks that improve reception

• Keep the antenna cable away from the power and camera video cables: running them together in parallel introduces noise.
• Check the roof antenna base: if it is corroded or loose, no piece of electronics will make up for it.
• Be wary of very cheap USB chargers: they are a classic source of FM buzzing.
• Check the tuner region in the head unit settings: it must be set to Europe, not Asia or America, or the frequency step will not match local stations.

Frequently asked questions

Is my new head unit broken?
Almost certainly not. If Bluetooth, CarPlay and the sound work, the tuner is fine; the problem is the antenna or its power supply.

Can I plug the antenna in directly without an adapter?
If the connector physically matches, yes, but you will lose the amplification in cars that have it. With FAKRA it does not even fit without an adapter.

Where do I connect the blue wire?
To the new head unit's antenna remote wire or to a switched live feed. Never to a permanent live, or the amplifier will stay powered all the time.

Does it work with any Android head unit?
Yes, as long as it has a standard DIN antenna input, which is the norm on every screen on the market.

Will I really notice the difference?
In a car with an amplified antenna, the difference is between picking up three noisy stations and getting the full list clearly.
