It is one of the questions we get most often on WhatsApp: "can I watch YouTube or Netflix in the car with this screen?". The short answer is that yes, technically you can, because an Android head unit is a computer with a touchscreen and it can install apps. The long answer is more interesting, because it mixes three different things: what the unit allows, what the phone allows and what the law allows while the car is moving.
Let's go through it calmly, with no odd promises, so you know exactly what to expect before buying.
Why an Android head unit can open video apps
The screens we fit are not closed media players: they run Android, with their own memory, WiFi and app store. As far as the unit is concerned, YouTube or a video player are ordinary applications, just as they would be on a tablet.
That opens up three ways of watching video on the car's screen:
- Apps installed on the unit itself, using WiFi (your phone's hotspot, for example) or mobile data if your version has its own connection.
- Video files on a USB stick or memory card, played with the system's own player. This is the most reliable route because it does not depend on coverage.
- An auxiliary video input, to connect an external source on the models that include one.
What does not work this way is CarPlay and Android Auto: they are projections of your phone designed for driving, and they only show the apps Apple and Google approve (navigation, music, messages, calls). You will not find Netflix inside CarPlay, and that is deliberate, not a fault of the unit.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThis is the important part. Spanish traffic regulations prohibit the driver from watching video or television images while the vehicle is moving. The screens that are allowed are the ones that help you drive: navigation, reversing camera, vehicle information. The rule is similar across most of Europe, so check your own country's regulations too.
In practice:
- With the car parked and the handbrake on, watching a film on the screen is no problem.
- With the car moving, video on the central screen is a punishable offence, and it is also one of the worst distractions there is.
- Rear screens for back-seat passengers are a different matter: they are not in the driver's field of view.
That is why many Android units include a video lock while driving: it is not a bug and it is not something to "unlock", it is what keeps the whole setup legal. If roadworthiness testing interests you, we cover it in depth in our guide on whether Android CarPlay screens pass the Spanish ITV test.
Cases where video genuinely makes sense
With all of that said, there are very real and perfectly reasonable uses:
- Long waits: work vans, campers, on-call shifts, waiting at the school gate or at the port.
- Children in the back seats, with the screen angled or with rear monitors.
- Camping and travel: a film with the car parked and, if your unit has RCA outputs, through the car's speakers.
- Work or workshop videos you need to check while stopped.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppTo avoid a frustrating experience, look at these four points:
- Enough RAM. Streaming video is demanding; with little RAM the app stutters. If in doubt, our guide on which RAM to choose in a CarPlay screen explains it.
- A connection. Either you share data from your phone over WiFi, or you choose a version with its own connectivity. Without internet you will only play local files.
- Sound. Audio comes out of the car's speakers, so remember to turn the volume down before starting up.
- Storage. For downloaded films a USB stick or card is plenty, and it removes any dependence on coverage.
Frequently asked questions
Does YouTube come preinstalled?
Not always. It depends on the system version: on many units it is installed from the app store or with the installation file, just like on any Android device.
Can I watch Netflix or Prime Video?
They are Android apps, so on most units they can be installed and signed into. We cannot guarantee that every service will always work: the platforms change their requirements and content protection on their own, and that does not depend on the unit.
Can I watch video through CarPlay or Android Auto?
No. CarPlay and Android Auto only project apps approved for driving. Video, if you want it, runs on the Android side of the unit.
Is it legal to remove the video lock while driving?
We strongly advise against it. A driver watching video while on the move is breaking the law and multiplying the risk of an accident. With the car parked there is no issue at all.
And for the children in the back?
The clean option is rear screens or a tablet attached to the headrest. That way the driver has no video in their field of view.
