The Volkswagen Sharan 7N and its twin brother, the Seat Alhambra II, share a platform, sliding doors and that seven-seat capacity that has made them the reference car for thousands of families. Do the Sharan and Alhambra have CarPlay as standard?

No, except on the very last units built. • Seat Alhambra II (7N), in every trim: Reference, Style, Xcellence and FR-Line.
• All engines: 1.4 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI in their various outputs, with manual or DSG gearbox.
• Units with RCD 310, RCD 510, RNS 315, RNS 510, Media System 2.2 and Media System Plus radios.

Before buying, the check that never fails is to look at the opening: if your current radio is double DIN with a rectangular frame integrated into the centre console, the screen fits. What is the installation like?

It is a plug & play installation: no vehicle cable has to be cut or spliced. With a little skill it can be done in your own garage in under an hour.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
2. Carefully remove the centre console trim, prying with a plastic tool, never a screwdriver.
3. Undo the screws holding the original radio and pull it straight out.
4. Unplug the Quadlock connectors, the aerial and, if fitted, the CD changer or amplifier cable.
5. Connect the supplied harness and the CAN Bus decoder to the new screen: this is the part that translates the car's signals so the steering wheel controls, warnings and automatic power-on keep working.
6. Plug the assembly into the vehicle Quadlock, connect the aerial and, if you are fitting one, run the rear camera cable to the tailgate.
7. Reconnect the battery and check sound, steering wheel controls and phone pairing before closing the dashboard.
8. Fit the screen into its frame, screw it in and refit the trim.

Do I keep the steering wheel controls on my Alhambra?
Yes. The included CAN Bus decoder keeps volume, track skip, phone and voice control working exactly as with the original radio.

Do I lose the parking sensors or the trip computer?
No. The sensors keep warning you and the trip computer data is shown in the instrument cluster, which is not touched. On many units the screen even displays the rear sensor graphic.

My Sharan has a sound system with an amplifier, does it still work the same?
Yes. The amplified outputs and the Quadlock connector respect the factory amplifier and speakers, with no loss of quality.

Is CarPlay wired or wireless?
Both. You can pair the iPhone over WiFi so it connects on its own at start-up, or plug it in over USB if you prefer to charge at the same time.

Can the original radio be refitted?
Yes. As no cable is cut, you simply unplug the harness and put the factory unit back. It is one hundred per cent reversible, which is worth keeping in mind if you plan to sell the car.
