The Volkswagen Scirocco is one of those cars you simply don't sell. Golf GTI mechanicals, coupé bodywork and a driving position that still hooks you fifteen years on. The only thing that gives away its age, every single time you get in, is the radio slot: an RCD 310 or RCD 510 with a tiny screen, no decent navigation and, of course, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Does the Volkswagen Scirocco have CarPlay as standard?

No. The third-generation Scirocco was built between 2008 and 2017 and throughout its commercial life it used the infotainment systems of the Golf VI era:

• RCD 210 / RCD 310: radio with a small monochrome display, CD and, depending on version, basic Bluetooth.
• RCD 510: small colour touchscreen, with CD changer and SD card slot.
• RNS 310 / RNS 510: the versions with built-in navigation, top of the range back then and today saddled with maps that cost too much to update.

None of them supports CarPlay or Android Auto. Volkswagen's App-Connect arrived with the next generation of head units, by which time the Scirocco was already in the final stretch of its commercial life. Nor is it something that can be "activated" via software: the necessary hardware isn't in the car.

You know the practical consequence: the phone on a mount blocking part of the windscreen, mediocre call audio and a factory navigation system asking for an update that is no longer worth paying for.

What is the installation like?

The installation is plug & play: the kit comes with the specific harness and frame, so there is no cutting or splicing of cables. A car audio installer does it in 30-60 minutes, and with the included guide it is perfectly doable at home.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
2. Remove the original radio. On the Scirocco's RCD units you use the U-shaped extraction keys that slide into the side slots of the fascia; they pull straight out without forcing.
3. Unplug the rear connectors: power, speakers and aerial. If your car has an RNS with a navigation module, also disconnect its specific wiring.
4. Connect the new screen's harness and the CAN Bus module. That module is the key part: it translates the car's signals and is what keeps the steering wheel controls and parking sensors working.
5. Route the reversing camera cable if you are fitting it, along the side of the cabin to the tailgate.
6. Fit the screen into its frame and check it sits flush with the console before tightening the screws.
7. Reconnect the battery, pair your phone over Bluetooth the first time and from then on CarPlay or Android Auto will connect on their own.

The official route simply doesn't exist for this car: Volkswagen does not offer an App-Connect retrofit for the Scirocco, because its head unit generation predates it. The only workshop alternative involves sourcing a unit from a newer model and adapting it, adding the cost of the part, the wiring, the labour and the coding, with no guarantee that everything will integrate properly.

My Scirocco has the RNS 510 with navigation, is the swap worth it?
Yes, if you use your phone to navigate. RNS maps are expensive to update and have no live traffic; with the new screen you use Google Maps or Waze through CarPlay, always up to date.

Do the steering wheel controls and trip computer still work?
Yes. The VAG-specific CAN Bus keeps volume, track skip and calls working from the steering wheel, and does not affect the instrument cluster information.

Does the screen look odd in the Scirocco's dashboard?
No, because the frame is model-specific and fits the factory opening. It looks integrated, not stuck on top.

Can I keep my factory speakers and amplifier?
