CarPlay Screen Radio for Toyota Yaris (2012-2017): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay screen radio for Toyota Yaris 2012-2017

The third-generation Toyota Yaris (XP130) is one of those cars that simply doesn't give trouble. Reliable, cheap to maintain and, in its hybrid version, one of the best-selling small cars in Spain for years. Plenty are still used daily, in town and as company cars, with hundreds of thousands of kilometres still ahead of them.

What has aged is the infotainment. Anyone driving a 2013, 2015 or 2017 Yaris knows the scene: the phone clipped to an air vent, Google Maps half visible and Bluetooth dropping calls. The answer isn't a new car, but replacing the radio with an Android screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto made to measure for the Yaris opening.

Does the Toyota Yaris have CarPlay as standard?

No. Toyota didn't add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to the Yaris until the following generation. The entire 2012-2017 cycle (and its facelifts) missed out. Depending on trim, what came from the factory was:

  • Basic CD radio with a monochrome display in entry-level trims.
  • Toyota Touch: small touchscreen with radio, Bluetooth and a reversing camera on some versions.
  • Toyota Touch 2 & Go: added built-in navigation, with maps that are now out of date and expensive to renew at the dealer.
  • Bluetooth hands-free and USB/AUX input, with no real integration with your phone's apps.

In other words: you can play music and make calls, but you can't see Google Maps on the screen, dictate messages or control Spotify without touching the phone. And Toyota never offered an official update adding CarPlay to these units.

The solution: Android radio for the Toyota Yaris

The Yaris 2012-2017 specific Android screen replaces the original unit while respecting the console design. What it brings:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: they connect by themselves as soon as you start the car.
  • Google Maps and Waze always up to date, with live traffic and alerts.
  • HD touchscreen much bigger and sharper than the original Toyota Touch.
  • Spotify, YouTube Music, podcasts and online radio from the screen itself.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 with an external microphone for clear calls.
  • Reversing camera input: you can reuse the factory one or add a new camera.
  • Working steering wheel controls via the included CAN Bus decoder.
  • WiFi, GPS, USB and RCA outputs for an amplifier or subwoofer.
  • 1+16 GB, 2+32 GB and 4+64 GB versions.

Toyota Yaris compatibility: supported versions

  • Toyota Yaris XP130 (2012-2017), 3 and 5 doors, including the 2014 restyling.
  • Yaris Hybrid 1.5 and the 1.0 and 1.33 petrol versions, plus the 1.4 D-4D diesel.
  • Trims such as Live, City, Active, Feel!, Advance and their equivalents.
  • Cars with a basic CD radio, Toyota Touch or Toyota Touch 2 & Go.
  • Units with and without a factory reversing camera.

It is plug & play: it connects to the car's original wiring, with no splices or cuts, and it can be undone at any time.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
  2. Remove the centre dashboard trim with a plastic pry tool, starting at the bottom of the console.
  3. Undo the radio screws and pull the original unit towards you.
  4. Disconnect the ISO connectors, the aerial and the camera cable if your car has one.
  5. Plug in the new screen's harness and the CAN Bus decoder, which keeps the steering wheel controls and vehicle information alive.
  6. Fit the microphone next to the interior mirror and route the cable through the roof trim.
  7. Slot the screen and its frame into place, screw it in and refit the trim.
  8. Reconnect the battery, start the car and pair your phone. From then on CarPlay opens by itself.

A workshop normally completes the job in a little over an hour. On the Yaris Hybrid the procedure is the same: the high-voltage system is never touched.

At PantallasPremium the Yaris 2012-2017 specific screen starts at for the 1+16 GB version, for the 2+32 GB and for the 4+64 GB, with shipping and all the wiring included.

At the dealer there is no equivalent route: Toyota does not sell an official CarPlay retrofit for the Yaris of this generation. All you can do there is update the Toyota Touch 2 & Go maps, an expense that repeats every few years and still gives you no Google Maps, Waze or Spotify on screen. For less money, and just once, the Android screen brings the car up to the level of a current model.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work the same on the Yaris Hybrid?
Yes. The radio opening and the infotainment wiring are the same as on the petrol and diesel versions, and the installation does not affect the hybrid system.

Do I keep the steering wheel controls?
Yes, thanks to the included CAN Bus decoder: volume, track skip and calls keep working from the wheel.

I have a factory reversing camera — do I lose it?
No. The original camera plugs into the screen's video input and still comes on by itself when you select reverse.

Is it readable in daylight?
Yes. It is an HD screen with good brightness and automatic day/night mode, well above the contrast of the original Toyota Touch.

Can it be removed if I sell the car?
Yes. As no cable is cut, you simply remove the screen and plug the original radio back in — you keep it intact.
