The Toyota Avensis T25 (2002-2008) is the perfect example of a car that outlasts fashions. It was the saloon and estate of fleets, taxi ranks and families who wanted a car that would never give trouble, and thousands are still on the road today, many with the 2.0 D-4D and over 300,000 km behind them. Mechanically it is still a rock; the problem is the dashboard.
The Avensis's original radio, with its tiny monochrome display and its buttons, stayed anchored in its era. There is no useful navigation, no music streaming and, of course, no Apple CarPlay and no Android Auto. If you use the car every day, that means a phone in a holder, cables across the dashboard and navigating on a six-inch screen. Replacing the infotainment unit is by far the upgrade you notice most for the least money in this car.
Does the Toyota Avensis have CarPlay as standard?
No. No version of the Avensis T25 left the factory with CarPlay or Android Auto: those technologies arrived a decade later. Depending on the trim, your car may have:
- Basic radio-CD with a single-line monochrome display, without Bluetooth.
- Radio with 6-CD changer, common on the Sol and Executive trims.
- Original Toyota navigation with a small screen and DVD maps, today completely obsolete and with no updates available.
- JBL sound system with amplifier, on some high-trim cars.
None of those units accepts a software update that adds CarPlay: it is a hardware limitation. The only realistic option is to replace the unit with an Android screen made for the Avensis slot.

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching anything.
- Remove the centre console trim, held by push clips.
- Undo the screws on the original radio and pull it out of the slot.
- Unplug the factory ISO connector and the aerial lead.
- Connect the specific harness with CAN Bus decoder that is included: this is what lets the new screen switch on with the ignition and keeps the steering wheel controls.
- Run the external microphone to the A-pillar or the interior mirror and the GPS aerial to the base of the windscreen.
- Fit the screen with its fascia, screw it in, refit the trim and reconnect the battery.
- Start up, pair the phone over Bluetooth and let CarPlay or Android Auto set themselves up.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth it on a car this old?
It is exactly the other way round: in an Avensis that will do another 100,000 km, spending a little over on up-to-date navigation, music and hands-free calling is one of the best value upgrades there is. And if you sell the car, a modern screen helps quite a lot.
My Avensis has the original DVD navigation. Can I remove it?
Yes. It is replaced by the new screen and you gain Google Maps and Waze with real-time traffic, far more useful than DVD maps that can no longer be updated.
Do I keep the steering wheel controls?
Yes, on the versions that have them from the factory. The CAN Bus decoder included keeps volume, track change and phone.
Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes. The screen has a video input and switches over by itself when you select reverse. It is a highly recommended extra on the Wagon estate.
What about the JBL sound?
It is kept. You only need to add the corresponding adapter for the amplifier; tell us when you order and we include it.
