CarPlay Head Unit for Seat Ateca and Cupra Ateca (2015-2024): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay and Android Auto head unit for Seat Ateca and Cupra Ateca (2015-2024)

The Ateca was Seat's first SUV and it went straight into the best-selling charts in Spain. It shares the MQB platform with the Golf and the Tiguan, it is small enough for any parking space, and it has a sober cabin that has aged rather well. The Cupra Ateca, the sportier version, starts from the same dashboard and the same centre console.

What has not aged so well is the screen. Depending on the trim the car was ordered in, your Ateca may have a small unit that only does radio and Bluetooth, or a larger system that never got phone mirroring added. If you have got used to driving with your phone clipped to an air vent so you can see Google Maps, there is a much cleaner alternative: a model-specific head unit for the Ateca that fits the original opening and brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Does the Seat Ateca have CarPlay as standard?

It depends on the trim and the year, and that is exactly why so many owners are caught out. Seat offered phone mirroring inside the Full Link pack (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink), which for much of the model's life was a paid option. A great many entry-level cars were sold without it.

In short, depending on the version an Ateca could have:

  • Media System Colour: a small touchscreen with radio, Bluetooth, USB and aux input. No navigation and no CarPlay.
  • Media System Plus / Navi System: a larger screen with built-in navigation, and Full Link only if the box was ticked when ordering the car.
  • Steering wheel audio controls on practically every version.
  • Parking sensors and a reversing camera depending on trim and option packs.

Even if your car does have Full Link, there is another common reason to change the screen: size. The factory units are small for what we now ask of a navigation system, and the connection is usually wired. Replacing the head unit with a current screen solves both things at once.

The model-specific head unit for this chassis replaces the original unit and brings:

  • HD touchscreen built into the dashboard, with a frame made to measure for the Ateca: nothing stuck on top of the dash.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: leave the phone in your pocket and it connects on its own as soon as you start the car.
  • Built-in GPS navigation plus Google Maps and Waze.
  • Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming.
  • FM radio and playback over USB, Bluetooth and Spotify, with several USB ports.
  • Steering wheel controls kept through the included CAN Bus module.
  • Reversing camera included, plus an input to keep or add parking sensors.
  • Plug & play installation, with a model-specific harness and without cutting any of the car's wiring.

Seat Ateca and Cupra Ateca compatibility: supported versions

The same kit fits the Ateca in its different variants:

  • Seat Ateca — from 2015 to 2024, in Reference, Style, Xcellence and FR trims.
  • Cupra Ateca — shares the dashboard and centre console with the Seat Ateca.
  • Pre-facelift and post-facelift cars, always checking the outline of the opening.
  • 1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI petrol and 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesel engines, manual or DSG.
  • Cars with Media System Colour, Media System Plus and Navi System.

The safest check before buying is to compare the outline of your centre console and the size of your current screen with the photos on the product page, because the trim surround changed between pre-facelift and post-facelift cars.

It is one of the more approachable jobs, as long as you work calmly and use plastic trim tools so you do not mark the panels:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a couple of minutes before starting.
  2. Release the centre console trim with a plastic pry tool, starting at the bottom and pulling towards you.
  3. Undo the screws holding the original unit and carefully slide it out.
  4. Unplug the main connector for power and speakers, the aerial lead and, if fitted, the camera or parking sensor connector.
  5. Plug in the new screen's harness: it fits the car's own connectors, and the CAN Bus module keeps the steering wheel controls, ignition and illumination signals working.
  6. Route the GPS aerial to the base of the windscreen and place the microphone near the rear-view mirror.
  7. Fit the screen into the opening and refit the trim surround.
  8. Reconnect the battery and test everything — sound, steering wheel controls, CarPlay, GPS and camera — before pushing all the trim fully home.

If FM reception seems weaker afterwards, check whether your unit had an amplified aerial: in that case you need a powered aerial adaptor, a small part that puts it back to how it was.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Seat Ateca?

Seat does not offer an official CarPlay retrofit for Atecas that left the factory without Full Link, so the realistic comparison is between taking the car to an audio shop to fit a generic head unit — with the fascia adaptor, harness and steering wheel interface bought separately, plus labour — or installing a kit already prepared for this chassis.

The model-specific kit saves exactly the expensive part, which is the adaptation: the fascia, the harness and the CAN Bus module are included and made to measure for the car. If you fit it yourself, the saving is bigger still. Memory options and up-to-date prices are always on the product page.

Does it also fit the Cupra Ateca?
Yes. The Cupra Ateca shares its dashboard, console and connectors with the Seat Ateca, so the kit fits in the same way.

Do the steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus module keeps them and they are set up from the head unit's menu in a few minutes.

What if my Ateca already has a reversing camera and parking sensors?
They can be kept. The screen has a video input for the car's camera and can display the sensor warnings.

Does CarPlay work without a cable?
Yes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless: you pair the phone once and from then on it connects on its own when you start the car.

Do I lose the original Navi System navigation?
You replace navigation that dates quickly with the screen's built-in GPS, plus live Google Maps and Waze through CarPlay or Android Auto.
