CarPlay Head Unit for Opel Insignia B and Sports Tourer (2015-2021): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay and Android Auto head unit for Opel Insignia (2015-2021)

The Opel Insignia is one of those cars you buy with your head: lots of space, impeccable motorway manners, diesel engines that pile on the miles without complaint and, in Sports Tourer form, a boot that swallows a whole family's holiday luggage. It is the typical companion of someone who covers a lot of miles for work. And that is exactly why it hurts when the infotainment falls short: if you spend four hours behind the wheel, the difference between wrestling with your phone and having Google Maps and Spotify built into the screen is enormous.

Here we explain what system each version of the facelifted Insignia A (2015-2017) and the Insignia B / Grand Sport and Sports Tourer (2017-2021) comes with as standard, and how to replace it with a model-specific 9-inch Android screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Does the Opel Insignia have CarPlay as standard?

It depends on the trim, and the difference between them is significant:

  • Entry-level trims were delivered with a simple radio and a small display: no phone projection and no navigation.
  • Trims with IntelliLink include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but always with a cable: the phone has to stay plugged into the USB port.
  • Versions with built-in navigation add their own maps, which today are updated at a trickle and feel slow compared with Waze or Google Maps.
  • Many fleet and leasing cars — very common on the Spanish used market — were specified with precisely the most basic system.

So there are two common scenarios: either your Insignia has no CarPlay, or it has it but tied to a cable and with no way to install a single new app.

The model-specific screen fills the original unit's slot, with its own frame and connector, and leaves the dashboard looking factory-fitted. What you gain:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: you sit down, start the car and the phone is already connected.
  • 9-inch HD touchscreen, clearly readable even in full daylight.
  • Navigation with live traffic and downloadable maps, ideal for long motorway trips.
  • Android with the Play Store: Spotify, YouTube, podcasts, online radio or your fleet management app.
  • Steering wheel controls, parking sensors and original camera kept thanks to the Opel CAN bus.
  • Hands-free with an external microphone, clearer for work calls.
  • GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, two USB ports and DSP to tune the sound to your taste.

Insignia compatibility: supported versions

The unit is prepared for the slot and connector of these versions:

  • Opel Insignia B Grand Sport (2017-2021), the second-generation saloon.
  • Opel Insignia B Sports Tourer (2017-2021), the estate body.
  • Facelifted Opel Insignia A (2015-2017), in saloon, hatchback and Sports Tourer.
  • Selective, Excellence, GSi and Country Tourer trims from the same period.
  • Engines 1.4 Turbo, 1.5 Turbo, 1.6 Turbo, 2.0 Turbo, 1.6 CDTi and 2.0 CDTi.
  • Equivalent Vauxhall Insignia and Buick Regal of the same period.

It replaces both the basic radio and the IntelliLink system of the mid trim. If you are not sure which one you have, send us a photo of your console on WhatsApp and we will confirm it free of charge.

It is a plug & play job using the car's own connectors, with no cable cutting:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start dismantling.
  2. Remove the centre console trim with a plastic tool, releasing the clips little by little so you do not damage the finish.
  3. Take out the original unit by undoing its screws and unplug power, speakers, aerial and USB.
  4. Connect the specific harness of the new screen to the vehicle's own connectors.
  5. Plug in the Opel CAN bus module, essential to keep the steering wheel controls, sensors and camera.
  6. Position the external microphone by the rear-view mirror or the A-pillar, and route the camera cable if you are fitting a new one.
  7. Check everything before closing up: audio, wireless CarPlay, GPS, camera and steering wheel controls. Then slot the screen in and refit the trim.

The whole process takes 30 to 60 minutes. A fitting guide is included and, if you prefer company, we will help you over WhatsApp while you do it.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to an Opel Insignia?

Adding the full IntelliLink system afterwards at an official service centre is rarely viable: it involves the unit, the wiring, the programming and the labour, and the quote soars only to end up with a CarPlay that still needs a cable. At a car audio installer the alternative is a branded unit plus frame, harness and steering wheel control adapter, adding up part by part.

The model-specific screen arrives with all of that already sorted and with wireless CarPlay included. The current price and the available memory versions are on the product page linked below.

My Insignia already has IntelliLink with CarPlay. Do I gain anything by changing?
You gain a wireless connection, a larger screen and an open Android system where you can install whatever apps you like. If the factory system suits you, there is no need to touch anything.

Do I keep the parking sensors and the reversing camera?
Yes, the Opel CAN bus module keeps both working with their on-screen displays.

Does it fit the Sports Tourer the same way as the Grand Sport?
Yes. Both bodies share the dashboard and radio slot, so the installation is identical.

What if my car is an Insignia A from before 2015?
That generation uses a different slot and connector. Write to us and we will point you to the right screen for your year.

Does it pass the roadworthiness test without problems?
Yes. It is integrated into the original slot and does not alter any safety component, so no approval is required.
