CarPlay Radio Screen for Mazda MX-5 NC (2008-2015): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Mazda MX-5 NC 2008-2015 - CarPlay and Android Auto Radio Screen

The Mazda MX-5 NC is one of those cars you buy to enjoy: front engine, rear-wheel drive, low weight and the roof down as soon as the sun comes out. Many owners keep it for years and look after it like a small classic, but there is one part that gives its age away as soon as you sit in it: the radio. With no navigation, no phone mirroring and controls designed around the CD, it forces you to keep your phone in a holder or in your pocket. A radio screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto gives the MX-5 everything it is missing without spoiling a dashboard as simple and attractive as its own.

Does the Mazda MX-5 NC have CarPlay as standard?

No. The MX-5 NC never offered Apple CarPlay or Android Auto: Mazda introduced them with the next generation, the ND, and its MZD Connect system. The NC has a radio with CD, auxiliary input and, depending on the trim and year, Bluetooth for calls. Some units have a Bose sound system with speakers in the headrests. No version has a touchscreen or an official update that lets you connect your phone.

The radio screen for the MX-5 NC replaces the original unit with an HD touchscreen and an adapter frame designed for the roadster's console. These are its features:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with no loose cables in a cabin where space is at a premium.
  • Integrated GPS navigation, compatible with Google Maps and Waze.
  • Bluetooth hands-free for calls and music.
  • FM radio and playback via USB, Bluetooth and Spotify.
  • CAN Bus wiring to keep the steering wheel controls.
  • Free reversing camera, very useful for parking such a low car.
  • Three memory configurations: 1 GB + 16 GB, 2 GB + 32 GB or 4 GB + 64 GB.

A wireless connection makes particular sense in the MX-5: the cabin is small, there are hardly any spaces to leave your phone and with the roof down you appreciate not having to deal with cables or the phone itself.

Mazda MX-5 NC compatibility: supported versions

The kit is compatible with the Mazda MX-5 NC (2008-2015), that is, the two updates of the third generation that came after its launch. It fits:

  • MX-5 with soft top (Roadster).
  • MX-5 Roadster Coupé with electric folding hard top, which shares the dashboard.
  • 1.8 and 2.0 engines, with manual or automatic gearbox.
  • Units with a basic radio or with factory Bluetooth.

If your MX-5 is one of the early NC units or has a Bose system, compare your console with the product photos and send us a photo of your radio via WhatsApp before buying: we will confirm compatibility for free. If you are looking for information on other Mazdas, our guide to CarPlay screens for Mazda covers them all, and we also have the guide for the Mazda 3 (2014-2019).

The kit includes the specific wiring with CAN Bus and the adapter frame, so it is plug & play:

  1. The centre console trims are removed and the original radio is taken out.
  2. The new radio's wiring is connected to the MX-5's original connector, without cutting any wires.
  3. The radio antenna, GPS antenna and USB are connected; the USB can be routed to the glovebox or the console.
  4. If the reversing camera is being fitted, its cable is routed inside the car to the number plate area.
  5. The screen is fixed in the frame, fitted into the dashboard and the CAN Bus and phone are set up.

At a car electronics workshop it takes one to two hours. The space behind the radio in the MX-5 is tight, so it is worth tidying the cables well before fitting the screen. The kit includes instructions in case you prefer to do it yourself.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Mazda MX-5 NC?

Mazda offers no official way to add CarPlay to the MX-5 NC: the dealership has no upgrade kit and the ND's MZD Connect system cannot be fitted to this generation. The usual alternative is a universal double-DIN radio, but the NC's slot is not a standard double DIN and you will need a frame, steering wheel adapter and camera separately, with a less integrated result.

The dedicated radio includes in the same box the frame adapted to the dashboard, the CAN Bus wiring, the GPS antenna and the reversing camera. You can check the current price of each version on the product page.

Can you see the screen well with the roof down?
It is an HD screen with adjustable brightness. With the sun straight ahead any screen loses some visibility, but you can raise the brightness from the menu and night mode switches on with the lights.

Do the steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The CAN Bus lets you keep controlling volume, tracks and calls from the steering wheel.

My MX-5 has a Bose system, does it work?
In most cases yes, but the Bose amplifier may require checking the wiring. Send us a photo of your radio and we will confirm before you buy.

Can you hear calls well with the roof open?
With the roof closed, no problem. With it open, quality depends on speed and wind noise, just like any hands-free system; in town you can talk normally.

Can I refit the original radio?
Yes. The installation does not cut any wires, so the factory radio can be put back if you sell the car or want to return it to its original state.
