CarPlay Screen Radio for Ford Mondeo Mk3 (2000-2007): How to Install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Ford Mondeo Mk3 CD132 - CarPlay and Android Auto Screen Radio

The Ford Mondeo Mk3, known internally by its CD132 chassis code, is still one of the best value-for-money cars on the Spanish used market. A solid platform, plenty of space, TDCi diesels that take everything you throw at them and road manners many current compacts would envy. The only thing that gives away its age once you sit inside is the audio system: a radio with an orange two-line display, a CD changer in the glovebox and, if you are lucky, a Bluetooth handsfree kit added later.

If you use the car every day, that gap shows. Navigation depends on a phone clipped to a vent, music goes through an FM transmitter that sounds mediocre, and answering a call means taking a hand off the wheel. Fitting an Android screen radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto solves all three at once.

Does the Ford Mondeo Mk3 have CarPlay as standard?

No, and it couldn't: the Mk3 was built long before Apple CarPlay and Android Auto existed. In fact it also predates the Ford SYNC system.

Depending on the trim level, your Mondeo Mk3 may have:

  • 6000 CD radio: the most common, with a two-line display and built-in CD player.
  • 6006 CDC radio: with a six-disc CD changer in the head unit itself or in the glovebox.
  • Navigation system with a small screen on the highest trim levels, using CD-ROM maps that haven't been issued for years.

None of them can mirror a phone or accept updates. At best you have an AUX input, and many cars don't even have that.

The Android screen radio specific to the Mondeo Mk3 fills the original radio opening with a fascia made to measure for the CD132 console. No filling gaps with foam and no leaving the dashboard with visible play.

What it brings:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay: the iPhone connects on its own as soon as you start the car.
  • Android Auto, also cable-free, with Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, podcasts and voice messaging.
  • Large high-resolution touchscreen, with day/night mode and adjustable brightness.
  • Up-to-date navigation with live traffic, speed camera alerts and automatic rerouting.
  • Rear camera input with guide lines, very useful in a car as long as the Mondeo.
  • Steering wheel controls kept working via the included CAN Bus module, on cars fitted with them.
  • Latest-generation Bluetooth, WiFi, USB and pre-amp output for an amplifier or subwoofer.
  • FM/AM radio and, depending on configuration, optional DAB.

The result is a dashboard that looks like it belongs to another car, without touching the structure or the original wiring.

Mondeo Mk3 compatibility: supported versions

This radio is designed for the third-generation Ford Mondeo (CD132 chassis), covering both the initial series and the later facelift.

  • Body styles: five-door hatchback, four-door saloon and Wagon estate.
  • Engines: it makes no difference. The 2.0 TDCi and 2.2 TDCi diesels and the 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec petrols share the same console.
  • Original equipment: valid whether your car came with the 6000 CD or the 6006 CDC.
  • Climate control: compatible with manual air conditioning and automatic climate control, since those controls sit below the radio opening.

The one case worth checking before ordering is a car with the original small-screen navigation system, because the console layout is different. If that is your case, send us a photo of the dashboard and we will confirm compatibility before you buy.

It is a plug & play fitting: it connects to the car's original harness through an adapter, without cutting or splicing anything.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a couple of minutes.
  2. Remove the original radio. The Mondeo Mk3 uses the classic U-shaped extraction keys: insert them into the four holes on the front until they click and pull outwards.
  3. Release the rear connectors: the ISO power and speaker plug, and the aerial lead.
  4. Connect the adapter harness of the new radio onto the original plug and connect the CAN Bus module, which handles the steering wheel controls and the ignition signal.
  5. Place the GPS antenna at the base of the windscreen or under the dashboard, with a clear view of the sky.
  6. Route the rear camera cable along the sill trim to the tailgate or number plate, if you are fitting one.
  7. Reconnect the battery and test everything before closing up: sound in all four speakers, steering wheel controls, CarPlay, GPS and camera.
  8. Fit the screen with its fascia and screw the assembly to the console.

With the tools at hand, the whole installation can be done in a quiet afternoon.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Ford Mondeo Mk3?

Through official channels, it simply doesn't exist. Ford offers no update that adds CarPlay or Android Auto to a Mk3, because the car predates even SYNC. The most a workshop usually suggests is adding a separate Bluetooth handsfree kit or an FM transmitter, patches that give you neither navigation nor a screen.

The Android screen radio is a one-off outlay that modernises the car for good and can even be removed and moved to another vehicle if you change cars one day. You can find the current price and the different memory configurations on the product page.

My Mondeo has Sony speakers and an amplifier, will they still work?
Yes. The radio has pre-amp outputs designed to work with an external amplifier, so the sound system is retained and usually improves on the original.

Do I keep the steering wheel controls?
On Mondeo Mk3s that came with them, yes: the included CAN Bus module keeps them working for volume, tracks and phone.

Do I need to take it to a workshop?
Not necessarily. It is a plug & play installation and the kit includes the model-specific fascia and wiring. If you would rather not deal with it, any car audio installer will fit it in a little over an hour.

Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes. The screen has a video input ready and the image appears automatically when you select reverse. It is a very worthwhile upgrade on the Wagon.

Will it drain the battery when the car is parked?
No. The radio switches off with the ignition just like the original one, and standby consumption is minimal, like any factory audio unit.
