Ford also has a quirk that confuses a lot of people: its factory radios are not standard 2 DIN. That instantly recognisable numeric keypad on the Focus MK2 or the Fiesta MK7 takes up a shape of its own, so a generic head unit leaves visible gaps. That is why model-specific screens matter even more here than with other brands. This guide sets out what each Ford needs.

Which Fords come with CarPlay as standard?

Ford introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with Sync 3. Everything before that was left out:

• Factory radios with a monochrome display and numeric keypad (Fiesta MK5 and MK7, Focus MK2, Mondeo MK4, Transit): no CarPlay, no touchscreen and no upgrade path.
• Sync 1: Bluetooth hands-free and basic voice control, but no smartphone integration on screen.
• Sync 2 (MyFord Touch): an 8" touchscreen split into four quadrants, in-house navigation and an interface that aged very badly. It does not support CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Sync 3: this is where Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrived, wired on the earliest units.

The practical conclusion: if your Ford has Sync 2 or an earlier radio, no software update will add CarPlay. It takes hardware.

The two solutions for a Ford: screen head unit or interface

• Model-specific screen head unit (full replacement). This is the option for Fords with a factory radio in the console: Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, C-Max, S-Max, Galaxy, Transit, Tourneo and Escape. The original unit comes out and an Android screen with a model-specific fascia goes in, reproducing the dashboard shape with no gaps or loose trim.
• CarPlay interface (the original screen stays). This is the option for cars with Sync 2, where the screen is built into the dashboard and worth keeping. A hidden module is fitted that injects CarPlay and Android Auto into the factory display, operated with the original touchscreen.

What is the installation like on a Ford?

In every case it is a plug & play installation: no original wiring is cut and the process is reversible.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the console trim. On many Fords the radio surround is joined to the climate control panel and comes off in one piece; release the clips with plastic tools, never with a screwdriver.
3. Take out the original radio. On models with a numeric keypad radio you need U-shaped release keys, which come with the kit.
4. Connect the harness and the CAN Bus decoder, essential for keeping the steering wheel controls, the warnings and the trip computer information.
5. Check the sound system. If your car has a Sony system with an amplifier, the matching adapter is needed to keep every speaker. Confirm before buying.
6. Fit the microphone near the rear-view mirror, seat the screen in its fascia and reconnect the battery.

A useful heads-up on Fords with digital climate control: the temperature is shown on the radio display. Model-specific screens keep that readout; generic ones lose it.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Ford?

At the dealer, the usual route is migrating from Sync 2 to Sync 3: replacing the module, the screen and the USB wiring, then programming it. That is expensive work on a car of a certain age, and even then you keep the factory screen and wired CarPlay. On pre-Sync models there is simply no official option.

If you like how your original screen looks and only want CarPlay, the interface is the cleanest route. If you also want a bigger screen and full Android, go for the model-specific unit.

Can I fit a universal 2 DIN head unit in a Focus or a Fiesta?
You can, but it shows: the factory aperture is not standard 2 DIN and you end up with visible gaps. A model-specific screen fits the model's own fascia.

I have a Sony sound system, will I lose my speakers?

Does the factory reversing camera still work?
