If you make your living behind the wheel of a truck, the cab is not a car: it is your office. You spend eight, ten or twelve hours in there, and everything that makes the shift easier — navigation, music, calls, hands-free while you deal with traffic — depends on a unit that, in most trucks, was left behind in the era of the CD radio and the USB stick.

While any 12,000-euro city car already comes with Apple CarPlay, plenty of heavy-duty cabs still have a radio that cannot even show you a map. Do trucks come with CarPlay as standard?

The short answer: almost never, and when they do it is expensive and limited. This is what you typically find in the fleet on the road today:

• Fleet and entry-level cabs are ordered with the simplest radio in the catalogue, because infotainment is treated as a dispensable extra when you buy ten trucks at once.
• The truck-specific navigation systems offered by manufacturers are an expensive option, with proprietary mapping that is updated slowly and for a fee.
• Where phone mirroring does exist, it is usually over a cable: the phone ends up plugged in and lying on the dashboard all day.
• In second-hand or imported trucks, the original radio may come with menus and stations from another country.

Every haulier knows the result: the phone clamped to the windscreen, with its small screen, heating up in the sun and blocking part of your view.

What is the installation like?

Fitting is plug & play and does not require cutting the original wiring if your cab uses a standard connector:

1. Disconnect the battery before touching anything. On a truck with two batteries in series, use the isolator switch if you have one.
2. Remove the trim around the radio slot with a plastic tool.
3. Pull out the original radio and unplug power, speakers and aerial.
4. Connect the screen's harness to the vehicle connectors, respecting permanent and switched live feeds.
5. Install the reversing camera on the rear door or the bumper valance, and run the cable inside to the screen.
6. Fit the microphone near the A-pillar, as far as possible from engine noise.
7. Test everything before closing up: sound, wireless CarPlay, GPS, camera and reverse gear. Then slide the unit in and refit the trim.

A normal installation takes between 30 and 60 minutes. A manual is included, and any car audio installer can do it in no time if you would rather not bother.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a truck?

The official route — ordering the brand's navigation infotainment from the dealer — is by far the most expensive: unit, wiring, coding, labour and, on top of that, paid map updates to keep it current. A portable truck sat-nav is cheaper, but leaves you with one more device on the windscreen, with its cable, its bracket and its small screen.
