CarPlay Screen Radio for BMW 1 Series E87 (2004-2011): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay + Android Auto screen radio for BMW 1 Series E87 E81 E82 E88 2004-2011

The BMW 1 Series E87 and its siblings E81 (3-door), E82 (coupé) and E88 (convertible) remain a sought-after used buy. Rear-wheel drive, 118d and 120d engines that keep piling on the miles and a driving feel few compacts still match today. The problem appears when you sit inside: the infotainment froze in 2007.

The Business CD radio with its orange display, or the iDrive CCC with its small screen and DVD maps, knows nothing about Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Spotify. The most direct way to modernise the car without touching anything else is to fit a model-specific Android screen for the 1 Series E87, which takes the factory opening and connects to the original wiring.

Does the BMW 1 Series E87 have CarPlay as standard?

No. The whole first generation of the 1 Series (2004-2011) predates CarPlay and Android Auto, and BMW never offered an official retrofit for these models. Depending on the equipment, your car will have:

  • Business CD radio with a monochrome display set into the dashboard.
  • Professional radio with better audio features, but equally limited connectivity.
  • iDrive CCC on units with navigation: a 6.5" or 8.8" screen, a rotary controller on the console and DVD mapping that is outdated today.
  • Optional Bluetooth hands-free, limited to calls and at most basic streaming.
  • Hi-Fi or Logic7 systems with an amplifier connected by fibre optics on the best-equipped versions.

None of these units lets you see Google Maps on screen or control your phone's apps, however modern the phone is.

The Android screen for the E87/E81/E82/E88 is designed for the 1 Series dashboard: the frame respects the original shape and the connector plugs into the factory harness. What it adds:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected automatically when you start the car.
  • Google Maps and Waze with live traffic and speed cameras, with no map DVDs or paid updates.
  • HD touchscreen much larger than the original iDrive CCC.
  • Spotify, YouTube Music, podcasts and online radio from the screen itself.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 with an external microphone included for hands-free calls.
  • Reversing camera input with automatic activation when you select reverse.
  • Steering wheel controls kept via the CAN Bus decoder.
  • Vehicle information and settings integrated on screen on the versions that support it.
  • 1+16 GB, 2+32 GB and 4+64 GB configurations, for manual or automatic gearbox.

BMW 1 Series compatibility: supported versions

  • BMW 1 Series E87 5-door (2004-2011).
  • BMW 1 Series E81 3-door (2007-2011).
  • BMW 1 Series E82 coupé (2007-2011).
  • BMW 1 Series E88 convertible (2008-2011).
  • All the usual engines: 116i, 118i, 120i, 116d, 118d, 120d, 123d and the 130i, with manual or automatic gearbox.
  • Cars with a Business CD, Professional radio or iDrive CCC.
  • Units with and without Hi-Fi/Logic7 sound: if your car has a fibre-optic amplifier, an optical decoder must be added to keep all the speakers.

When ordering it helps to state whether the gearbox is manual or automatic and whether the car has iDrive, because the harness varies slightly.

It is plug & play and fully reversible: no car cable is cut.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal — on the 1 Series the battery is in the boot.
  2. Remove the centre console trim with a plastic pry tool, starting around the climate controls.
  3. Take out the radio or the iDrive unit by undoing its screws and pulling carefully towards you.
  4. Disconnect the Quadlock connectors, the Fakra aerial and the fibre optics if present.
  5. Connect the new screen's harness and the CAN Bus decoder, essential for keeping the steering wheel controls and the car's warnings working.
  6. If the car has Hi-Fi or Logic7, insert the fibre-optic decoder into the MOST ring to recover the amplified sound.
  7. Install the microphone near the rear-view mirror and hide the cable in the A-pillar trim.
  8. Slot the screen into the opening, reconnect the battery, start the car and pair your phone.

An experienced installer usually takes one to two hours, a little longer if the optical decoder or a reversing camera also have to be fitted.

At PantallasPremium the specific screen for the 1 Series E87/E81/E82/E88 starts at (1+16 GB), (2+32 GB) and (4+64 GB), with shipping and wiring included, and with a manual or automatic option.

At the official dealer the comparison is simple: BMW does not offer any update that adds CarPlay to an E87. The only routes left there are updating the iDrive CCC map DVDs — a recurring cost that ages just as quickly — or replacing the original unit with a breaker's one, which still gives you no connected navigation or apps. Fitting the Android screen is cheaper, is done once and doesn't expire.

Frequently asked questions

My E87 has iDrive — does it still fit?
Yes. The screen also replaces units with iDrive CCC. State that your car has iDrive when ordering so we send you the right harness.

I have Hi-Fi/Logic7 sound — will I lose my speakers?
No, as long as you add the fibre-optic decoder: that module lets the screen talk to the original amplifier and keeps all the speakers.

Do the steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus decoder keeps volume, track skip and call handling working from the steering wheel.

Does it cause battery or electrical problems on the BMW?
No. The unit is powered from the same circuit as the original radio and respects the car's sleep modes, so it doesn't cause abnormal drain when installed with the specific harness.

Can I return the car to standard?
Yes. The installation cuts no original cable: you keep the factory radio and can refit it whenever you want.
