Front camera for cars: what it is for and how to install it

Almost everyone thinks of the reversing camera first, and rightly so: it prevents 90 % of silly bumps. But anyone who parks daily in a tight garage, nose-in against a wall or in streets full of bollards knows that the other blind spot is at the front. From the driver's seat you cannot see the metre and a half right below the bumper, and that is exactly where scraped splitters, high kerbs and car park pillars happen.

The answer is a front camera: a small camera fitted out of sight in the grille that sends its image to your Android head unit's screen. In this guide we explain what it is really for, how it differs from a dashcam, what you need to install it and how to fit it step by step.

What is a front camera for?

It is not a gadget: it solves very specific everyday situations.

• Parking nose-in without hitting the kerb. You see exactly where the bumper ends and how much room you have left.
• Car parks and narrow bays. Concrete pillars and ramps fall outside your field of view from the seat; on screen you have them under control.
• Pulling out of a driveway or a junction with poor visibility. You can edge the nose out and see what is coming before exposing the whole car.
• Manoeuvring on narrow roads or dirt tracks, when you cannot tell whether the wheel is about to drop into the ditch.
• Low cars or sports bumpers: it is the cheapest way to protect a skirt that costs a fortune to repaint.

Front camera, dashcam or sensors: they are not the same

This is the most common question, so it is worth separating the three ideas:

• Front-view camera. It goes hidden in the grille, points down and forward, and its image appears on the head unit's screen when you activate it. It is for manoeuvring.
• Dashcam or DVR camera. It goes on the windscreen, points at the road and records the trip so you have evidence in case of an accident. It is for recording, not for parking.
• Parking sensors. They beep to tell you something is close, but not what it is or at what height. They complement the camera very well: see our guide to parking sensors if you are considering both.

What you need to install a front camera

There are few requirements, but it is worth checking them before buying:

• A screen with an RCA/AV video input. Every Android and CarPlay head unit on the market has one. If your car still has the factory radio, you need the screen first: our catalogue has a specific model for almost any car.
• Space in the grille or behind the badge to house the camera out of sight.
• A long video cable to reach from the nose to the head unit (normally between 5 and 6 metres).
• A switched live feed to power the camera.

As for the camera itself, look at three things: that it is HD (a low-resolution camera is useless at night), that it has IP67 protection or higher — it sits at the front and takes water, mud and pressure washes — and that the angle is wide, around 170°, so you also see the corners of the bumper.

How to install it step by step

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching anything.
2. Choose the position: lower grille, badge recess or next to the number plate. Test the image before fixing anything permanently.
3. Fit the camera with the supplied screws or adhesive, angled slightly downwards so you see the ground right in front of the car.
4. Route the video cable from the nose into the cabin through the engine bay grommet, then along the lower dashboard trim to the head unit. Avoid hot and moving areas.
5. Power the camera from a switched live feed (not a permanent one, or it will stay on all the time).
6. Connect the RCA to the front video or AV input of the screen.
7. Set up the trigger in the head unit menu: manually via an icon, or automatically if your unit lets you assign the front input.
8. Test and adjust the angle with the car on the ground and, if you can, with a box in front as a visual reference.

Allow one to two hours, most of it spent routing the cable neatly. If you would rather not work in the engine bay, any car audio installer will do it quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Does it come on by itself in first gear?
It depends on the head unit. If your screen lets you configure a front input, yes; if not, you switch it on from a menu icon. Either way it takes less than a second to appear.

Does it survive rain and pressure washing?
Yes, as long as the camera is IP67 or higher, which is the standard for the ones we sell. What you should avoid is aiming the pressure lance point-blank at the connector.

Can you see well at night?
Yes. Because it sits at the front it works with the light from the car's own headlights, so the night image is usually better than that of a rear camera.

Can I have a front and a rear camera at the same time?
Yes. The head unit tells the two inputs apart: the rear one comes on by itself in reverse and the front one is activated manually or when you come out of reverse.

Does it work on any car?
Yes, as long as your screen has a video input and there is room in the grille. The brand-specific versions simply fit better.
