CarPlay Screen Head Unit for Volvo: compatibility and installation guide, model by model

Volvo has a very clear customer profile in Spain: cars bought to last and kept for many years. An XC90 or a V70 that is fifteen years old is still a superb car inside —seats, sound insulation, safety— but its multimedia system is stuck in the age of the CD and the map DVD.

The typical Volvo problem is twofold: the centre console is a very distinctive design element (that floating console with the number keypad) and much of the range uses fibre optic audio. That is why not just any radio will do here: you need the specific part. This guide gathers, model by model, what each Volvo has from the factory and which CarPlay and Android Auto solution it needs.

Which Volvos come with CarPlay as standard?

Very few, and only at the end of the modern range. These are the systems you will come across:

• Performance / High Performance radio: the most common one on the C30, S40, V50, C70, S80 and V70. Monochrome display, CD and radio. No phone projection.
• Premium Sound: better audio, with an amplifier and a fibre optic bus. It sounds good, but it still has no CarPlay and it does affect the installation.
• RTI (Road and Traffic Information): the in-house navigation, with a pop-up screen and a control on the steering wheel. Map data on DVD, outdated today.
• Sensus Connect: arrives with the most recent generation. A modern interface, but phone projection only appears on specific cars and, when it exists, it is usually wired.

If your Volvo falls into any of the first three groups, no software update will add CarPlay: the only real route is the specific screen or interface.

The solution: Android screen or interface, depending on your Volvo

There are two routes, and choosing the right one is half the job:

• Full Android screen (replaces the original radio): for Volvos with the Performance radio or RTI. You get a large HD touchscreen, Android with the Play Store, its own GPS and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.
• CarPlay interface (keeps the original screen): for Volvos with Sensus, where the factory system is modern and worth keeping. The interface is spliced in and adds CarPlay and Android Auto using the car's original screen and controls.

In both cases the steering wheel controls, the hands-free system and, where fitted, the amplified sound system are kept —on cars with fibre optics, by means of the matching adapter—.

These are the families with a specific solution, with the product page or guide for each one:

What is the installation like on a Volvo?

It is a plug & play job on the car's own connectors, with a couple of details specific to the brand:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before taking anything apart.
2. Release the console trim with a plastic tool. On the floating console models take your time: the clips are long and the panel is a visible part.
3. Remove the original unit —on many Volvos it comes out with extraction keys or side screws— and unplug power, speakers and aerial.
4. Check whether you have fibre optics: if the car has Premium Sound or an amplifier you will see an optical connector. That is where the fibre adapter is needed so you do not lose the original sound system.
5. Connect the specific harness to the factory connectors, with no cutting or splicing.
6. Plug in the CAN-BUS module, which is what keeps the steering wheel controls, parking sensors and on-screen warnings working.
7. Fit the microphone next to the mirror and, if you are adding a camera, run the cable to the tailgate along the roof trim.
8. Test everything before closing up: audio, wireless CarPlay, GPS, camera and controls.

Between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the model, a little longer if the fibre adapter has to be fitted. It comes with a manual and with WhatsApp support while you do it.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Volvo?

At an official service centre, the usual answer for a Volvo with RTI or Performance is that the system does not support CarPlay: it is not updated, it is replaced. And replacing it with a branded unit means equipment, trim, wiring, adapters and labour, with a result that in many cases is still wired projection.

The specific screen comes as a complete kit —trim, harness, CAN-BUS, microphone and GPS— with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto included. If your car has Sensus, the interface is even less invasive, because it keeps the original screen. Each product page shows the current price and the versions available.

Frequently asked questions

My Volvo has Premium Sound with an amplifier. Do I lose the sound?
No, as long as the matching fibre optic adapter is used. It is the key point of a Volvo installation and worth checking before you buy.

Do I lose the steering wheel controls or the parking sensors?
No. The specific CAN-BUS module keeps them, with their warnings on the new screen.

I have the RTI navigation. Is it worth replacing?
Yes. Its map data depends on a DVD that is no longer updated. With the new screen you navigate with Google Maps or Waze, with live traffic.

I have Sensus and I like the original screen. Is there an alternative?
Yes: the CarPlay interface. It is spliced in without removing the screen and adds CarPlay and Android Auto operated with the car's original controls.

Does the same screen fit a 2009 V70 and a 2013 one?
No. Console, connectors and audio system change between series, which is why each product page states the exact year range.

Will it pass the roadworthiness test?
Yes. It goes in the original aperture and does not alter any safety component, so no type approval is required.
