CarPlay Head Unit for Volvo C30, S40, V50 and C70 (2004-2012): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay and Android Auto head unit for Volvo C30, S40, V50 and C70 (2004-2012)

Volvo's P1 generation —the C30, the S40, the V50 and the C70 convertible— is ageing remarkably well. They are solid, comfortable cars, with seats that are still among the best in the class and a floating centre console that was a small design revolution in its day. The trouble starts when you switch the radio on: behind that lovely console sits an HU-650 or HU-850 unit with an orange dot-matrix display, a CD player and, if you are lucky, Bluetooth added later by an installer. No maps, no streaming music, no voice messaging.

If you like your Volvo and have no plans to replace it, there is a clean way to bring it up to date without ruining the dashboard: swap the original radio for a model-specific Android screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built with the frame and connector of this platform.

Does the Volvo C30, S40, V50 or C70 have CarPlay as standard?

No. No version of this generation (2004-2012) left the factory with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto: Volvo did not introduce those systems until Sensus Connect on much later models. Depending on trim, what you may have is:

  • HU-450 / HU-650 radio with a single-line monochrome display, FM radio and CD.
  • HU-850 with Premium Sound and Dolby Pro Logic II: great sound for its time, but no modern connectivity.
  • Optional RTI navigation, with the pop-up screen on the dashboard and DVD maps that are now completely out of date.
  • At best, a Bluetooth kit added afterwards, limited to calls and with no control from the screen.

In practice that means a phone in a vent mount, GPS coming out of the phone speaker and zero integration with the car.

A model-specific Android screen goes into the original radio slot, respecting the look of the floating console, and adds everything the car is missing:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects by itself when you start the car, no cables and no daily pairing.
  • Navigation with Google Maps or Waze, with live traffic and alerts, plus downloaded maps for areas without coverage.
  • Android with the Play Store: Spotify, YouTube Music, podcasts, online radio or whichever app you use daily.
  • Bluetooth and hands-free with an external microphone, far clearer than the original kit.
  • Reversing camera input, especially useful in the C30 and C70 because of their limited rear visibility.
  • Steering wheel controls kept thanks to the specific CAN bus module.
  • Built-in GPS, WiFi, USB and DSP so you can tune the sound to your taste.

Volvo P1 compatibility: supported versions

This screen is designed for the models that share the P1 platform and the same radio slot:

  • Volvo C30 (2006-2012), R-Design trims included.
  • Volvo S40 II (2004-2012), saloon.
  • Volvo V50 (2004-2012), estate.
  • Volvo C70 II (2006-2012), coupé-cabriolet.

It works both on basic units and on Premium Sound versions, and the engine makes no difference (1.6D, 2.0D, D2, D3, D5, T5…). If you are unsure about your particular trim, send us a photo of your current radio on WhatsApp and we will confirm the fit free of charge.

It is a plug & play job: it uses the factory connectors and no cable needs cutting.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
  2. Remove the floating console trim with a plastic tool, prying gently so you do not mark the plastic or the aluminium.
  3. Take out the original radio by undoing its screws and unplug the power, speaker and aerial connectors at the back.
  4. Connect the specific harness of the new screen to those same connectors: they only fit one way, so it is hard to get it wrong.
  5. Plug in the CAN bus module, which keeps the steering wheel controls and vehicle information working.
  6. Route the reversing camera cable if you are fitting one, guiding it along the side trim to the tailgate or boot.
  7. Check everything before closing up: sound, wireless CarPlay, GPS and steering wheel controls. Then slot the screen in and refit the trim.

Taken calmly, the job takes 30 to 60 minutes. It ships with a fitting guide and WhatsApp support if any question comes up halfway through.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Volvo C30, S40 or V50?

At an official service centre the answer is simple: there is no update that adds CarPlay to this generation, because the original hardware does not support it. The alternative at a car audio installer means buying a branded unit, then adding the adapter frame, the harness, the steering wheel control interface and the labour: the quote piles up part by part and the finish depends heavily on the workshop's skill.

With a model-specific screen that work is already done at the factory: frame, connector and CAN bus included, with the correct fit for the Volvo console. You will find the current price and the available memory versions on the product page linked below.

Do I lose Premium Sound / Dolby Pro Logic II?
The screen replaces the head unit and has its own DSP for equalisation and balance. If your car has a separate amplifier, let us know before ordering and we will tell you the correct setup.

Does the trip computer in the instrument cluster still work?
Yes. Cluster information is independent of the radio and is not affected.

Does it fit the C70 convertible the same way?
Yes, the C70 II shares its console and radio slot with the C30, S40 and V50, so the installation is identical.

Is CarPlay wireless?
Yes, both CarPlay and Android Auto work without cables, although you can still connect by USB if you want to charge the phone at the same time.

Does it pass the roadworthiness test?
Yes. As it sits in the original slot and does not touch any safety component, a model-specific screen needs no approval.
