The fourth-generation Polo, the one Volkswagen called Typ 9N internally, is still one of the most common small cars on the road. It sold in huge numbers, takes the miles with unusual dignity and is still many people's first car. The one thing that has clearly been left behind is the audio system: a CD radio with a two-line display, no navigation, no Bluetooth on most units and no comfortable way of using your phone. A screen radio with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto solves all of that at once, fitting into the original slot without touching anything else on the dashboard.
Does the Volkswagen Polo Mk4 have CarPlay as standard?
No. The Polo 9N was sold with the RCD 200, RCD 300 and RCD 500 radios (and the RCD 210 on the last units), CD units with FM radio and, depending on the version, a disc changer or an auxiliary input. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto came long after this car: they were not offered as an option and there is no software update that adds them. Factory navigation was not available on almost any version either, and the MFD that did include it used map CDs that are no longer updated.
In other words: on a Polo Mk4 the only real way to have CarPlay and Android Auto is to replace the radio with an Android screen made specifically for this dashboard.
The solution: Android radio for the Volkswagen Polo Mk4

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe specific screen radio for the Polo 9N replaces the original unit and stays integrated in the console with its own fascia, with no gaps or improvised adapters. This is what it brings:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects on its own when you start the car, with no cable and no menus.
- 9-inch HD touchscreen, far larger than the original radio slot.
- Android system with the Play Store: Google Maps, Waze, Spotify or internet radio install just like on a phone.
- Built-in GPS, which also works without data if you download the offline maps beforehand.
- Bluetooth hands-free, WiFi, two USB ports and DSP to tune the sound of the standard speakers.
- Wiring with Volkswagen CAN Bus: the steering wheel controls are kept on units that have them.
- Reversing camera input, with a free camera included in the kit.
- Three memory configurations, from 1 GB + 16 GB to 4 GB + 64 GB, depending on how smooth you want it.
If you are unsure about the size, our guide on which screen size to choose explains how each size looks in a compact dashboard like the Polo's.
Polo Mk4 compatibility: supported versions
The kit is made for the Polo IV in both phases, which are easy to tell apart by the headlights:
- Polo IV Typ 9N, the one with rounded "cat's eye" headlights.
- Polo IV Typ 9N3, the facelift with angular headlights and a front end similar to the Golf of its time.
- Early units of the Polo V Typ 6R, with the right fascia.
The engine makes no difference (1.2, 1.4 16V, 1.4 TDI, 1.6, 1.9 SDI, 1.9 TDI or the GTI versions) and neither does the climate control: it works both with manual air conditioning with dials and with Climatronic, because the climate controls sit in their own module below the radio and are not touched.
What is worth checking before buying is your current radio slot, because there are trim differences between phases. The quickest way: send us a photo of your centre console and we will confirm free of charge over WhatsApp whether your Polo takes the kit's fascia. And if your car is the next-generation Polo, it has its own guide in CarPlay radio for the Volkswagen Polo (2008-2020).
What is the installation like?

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe kit comes with the specific fascia and wiring, so it is a plug & play job: no cutting or splicing of the car's wiring.
- The original radio is removed. On the Polo 9N most units come out with U-shaped extraction keys inserted into the four holes on the front.
- The ISO connector for power and speakers and the Fakra aerial lead are unplugged at the back.
- The screen's harness is plugged into the car's original connector and the CAN Bus module, which translates the steering wheel controls, is connected.
- The GPS aerial (usually under the windscreen trim or on top of the dashboard) and the hands-free microphone are fitted.
- If the reversing camera is fitted, its cable is run through the interior to the tailgate, next to the number plate.
- The screen and its fascia are clipped into the slot, switched on and the phone is paired to start using CarPlay or Android Auto.
It is one of the most rewarding installations there is: at a car electronics workshop it takes around an hour, a little more with the camera. If you do it yourself, allow between half an hour and an hour at a calm pace. To understand exactly what the module that keeps the steering wheel buttons does, you can read what the CAN Bus is and when a decoder box is needed.
How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Polo Mk4?
Through the dealer it simply does not exist: Volkswagen does not offer any unit with CarPlay for a car of this generation, so the only official alternative would be fitting an accessory radio and paying separately for the fascia, the steering wheel control adapter and the labour.
The other common option is a cheap universal radio. The problem is not the screen, it is the finish: you have to buy the Polo fascia, the control adapter and the camera separately, and the result on the dashboard is rarely as tidy. We look at this in detail in the comparison model-specific vs universal screen.
The specific radio for the Polo Mk4 includes the fascia, the CAN Bus wiring, the GPS aerial, the microphone and the free reversing camera in the same box. You will find the current price of each memory version on the product page.

Message us on WhatsApp with your make, model and year and we will tell you exactly which screen fits your car. We reply in minutes.
Talk to an expert on WhatsAppWill I lose my Polo's steering wheel controls?
No, if your Polo has them. The wiring includes the Volkswagen CAN Bus module that keeps them working, and they can be reassigned from the radio if any function does not match. If they give you trouble, there is our guide to steering wheel controls with an Android radio.
Does it work with Climatronic?
Yes. The Polo 9N's climate controls are in a separate module that is not replaced, so they keep working exactly as before, both manual and automatic.
Can you tell it is not the original radio?
You can tell the screen is bigger, but the fascia is model-specific and sits flush with the console in the same black finish. There are no gaps or loose parts on show.
My Polo has the 6-CD changer, do I lose it?
Yes, the CD changer stops being used because the new radio does not control it. In exchange you get USB, Bluetooth and the Play Store, which is where music lives today.
Can I refit the factory radio?
Yes. As no wire is cut, you only have to unplug the harness and refit the original RCD with its fascia.
