One of the questions we receive most before someone buys an Android radio is whether they will lose the steering wheel controls. And one of the most common queries after installing it is exactly that: "the steering wheel buttons do nothing" or "I turn up the volume and it changes station". The good news is that it almost always has a solution and, in most cars, it is fixed from the radio's own menu in a few minutes. In this guide we explain how steering wheel controls work with an Android radio, why they can fail and what to do in each case.
How are steering wheel controls connected to an Android radio?
The steering wheel buttons are not wired directly to the radio: in most modern cars they send their commands through the CAN Bus, the data network through which the vehicle's modules communicate. In older cars they do it with an analogue resistance signal, where each button generates a different value.
That is why radios made for each specific model include a CAN Bus box or wiring with a built-in decoder: it translates the car's signals into commands the Android radio understands. This keeps the volume, track skipping, calls and, in many models, the voice assistant button to talk to Siri or Google.

Talk to an expert on WhatsApp- Wrong CAN Bus protocol selected. This is cause number one. The radio needs to know which decoder it has and for which car; if another model or brand is selected in the settings, the buttons do not respond or respond incorrectly.
- The CAN Bus box is not connected, or the small connector going to the radio has come loose when pushing the screen into the dashboard.
- Buttons not learned. In cars with resistance-based controls you have to "teach" the radio what each button does.
- Different car version. Some models have variants with or without controls, or with a different multifunction wheel depending on the trim.
- Universal radio without an adapter. If you have fitted a universal radio, you need a steering control decoder specific to your car; without it, the buttons will never work.
How to set up steering wheel controls step by step
- Go to Settings → Factory settings (or "Car settings"). It usually asks for a password found in the manual; if you do not have it, write to us and we will give it to you.
- Find the CAN Bus / Protocol section and select the decoder manufacturer and your exact make, model and year.
- Save and restart the radio by switching off the ignition for one minute.
- If your car uses resistance-based controls, open the Steering wheel controls app (sometimes called "SWC" or "Steering Wheel"), press the first steering wheel button, assign its function on screen and repeat with all of them.
- Test volume, tracks and calls with the engine running and with CarPlay or Android Auto connected.
If after this a button still does not respond, check that the CAN Bus box connector is properly seated behind the radio: it often shifts when the screen is pushed all the way into the opening.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppYes. Once set up on the radio, the steering wheel controls also control CarPlay and Android Auto: volume up and down, skipping songs on Spotify or Apple Music, and answering or ending calls. In many cars, holding the voice button opens Siri or the Google assistant. If that particular button does not launch the assistant, it can be assigned from the same steering wheel controls app.
Specific or universal radio to keep the controls?
With a radio made for your model, the wiring and CAN Bus come ready for your car and the controls work once the protocol is selected. With a universal 2 DIN radio, such as the universal radio screen with wireless CarPlay, the radio supports steering wheel controls, but you will need to add the right decoder for your vehicle. We explain this in more detail in specific vs universal screen and in the guide to the 2 DIN radio with CarPlay.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppI turn up the volume and it skips the track. What is happening?
The buttons are assigned the wrong way round or with the wrong protocol. Check the selected CAN Bus and, if your car uses resistances, learn the buttons again one by one.
The controls used to work and have stopped. Why?
This usually happens after an update or a factory reset that erases the CAN Bus configuration. Select your car again in the settings.
Do I lose the trip computer information?
No. The instrument cluster keeps working as before; in some models the radio even shows car data such as open doors or parking sensors.
Can controls be added if my car did not have them?
There are wireless steering wheel controls that pair with the radio, but they do not replicate the original ones; if your car had no controls, the radio is operated from the screen or by voice.
