CarPlay Radio Screen for MINI: compatibility and installation guide model by model

The MINI probably has the most recognisable dashboard of any car on the road: that huge round central speedometer which, in the early generations, took up half the console. It is a brand signature and, at the same time, the reason why not just any radio will do here: the aperture is not a standard double DIN, it is a piece with a shape of its own.

The other problem is the electronics. A Cooper R56 or a Countryman R60 are still hugely entertaining cars to drive, but their infotainment stopped at the CD, at basic Bluetooth and, at best, at a navigation system whose maps are no longer updated. This guide goes generation by generation through what each MINI has from the factory and which Android screen or interface with CarPlay and Android Auto matches it.

Which MINIs come with CarPlay from the factory?

Very few, and always at the end of production. What you usually find is:

• Boost radio with CD: the one in the R50, R52 and R53. Built into the central speedometer or just below it, with no touchscreen of any kind.
• Visual Boost: the 6.5" colour display of the R56 and the R60, set into the central ring. It looks good, but it is not a touchscreen and it does not run phone apps.
• MINI Connected: the rotary-controller system of the middle era. It adds online radio and some in-house apps, but it does not mirror the phone screen.
• NBT and NBT EVO: the platform shared with BMW in the F54-F60 family. Here Apple CarPlay does appear on some cars, but CarPlay only: for years MINI did not offer Android Auto, and in many markets the feature came as a subscription.

The result: most MINIs on the road have no phone projection, and those that do usually leave Android users out. Neither case can be fixed with a software update.

Two routes: a new screen or an interface on the original one

With MINI there are two different solutions, and it is worth knowing which one applies to you:

• Model-specific Android screen: it replaces the central unit with one made to measure for the MINI ring. This is the route for the R50, R52, R53, R56, R60 and for anyone who wants a large screen and full Android.
• CarPlay interface: it touches neither the original screen nor the rotary controller. It is spliced into the NBT system's wiring and adds CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the factory look one hundred percent. This is the option for the F54, F55, F56, F57 and F60 family and for the R60 with its original system.

In both cases you gain the same where it matters: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Google Maps and Waze with real traffic, Spotify and podcasts, hands-free with an external microphone, camera input and retention of the steering wheel controls through the model-specific CAN-BUS module.

What is the installation like on a MINI?

It is a plug & play fit onto the car's own connectors:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before removing anything.
2. Release the central ring and the trims with a plastic tool. This is the trickiest part on a MINI: they are large, highly visible pieces held by clips.
3. Pull out the original unit, undoing the screws, and disconnect power, speakers, antenna and USB. If you are fitting an interface, here you only splice the harness in behind the original screen.
4. Plug in the model-specific harness to those same connectors, without cutting or splicing any original wiring.
5. Connect the CAN-BUS module, which keeps the steering wheel controls, the parking sensors and the vehicle warnings.
6. Fit the microphone next to the rear-view mirror and, if you are adding a camera, run the cable to the tailgate along the roof edge.
7. Test everything before closing up: audio, CarPlay, GPS, camera and controls.

Between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the model; the interface is usually even quicker. It comes with a manual and WhatsApp support while you do it.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a MINI?

At the official service, for an R56 or a Countryman R60 the answer is usually a flat no: that hardware does not support CarPlay, not even with an update. And on the F-family MINIs, where the feature exists, it has been sold as an option or even as a subscription, and almost always without Android Auto.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MINI's signature central ring preserved?
Yes. The screens are built with the frame specific to each generation, and with the interface the original screen is not even removed.

My MINI already has CarPlay but no Android Auto. Is there a fix?
Yes, and that is exactly what the interface is designed for: it adds Android Auto without touching the original system or losing the CarPlay you already have.

Do I lose the steering wheel controls or the rotary controller?
No. The steering wheel controls are preserved by the CAN-BUS module, and with the interface you still operate the menu with the original rotary controller.

Does the same screen fit an R56 and an F56?
No. They are different platforms, with different dashboards and connectors. Each product page states the exact generation range.

Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes, all of them have a video input ready. On the Countryman it is one of the most appreciated upgrades.

Will it pass the roadworthiness test?
Yes. It goes in the original aperture and does not alter any safety component, so no type approval is required.
