The MINI Cooper dashboard is one of the few things nobody wants to touch. That circular screen in the middle, the light ring that changes colour, the aircraft-style toggle switches and the rotary controller on the console are as much part of the car's charm as the engine or the bodywork. What is the installation like?

It is plug & play and no cable in the car gets cut. Allow around 45-60 minutes.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
2. Using a plastic trim tool, release the outer ring and the surround around the circular screen.
3. Remove the screen screws and pull it out just enough to reach the rear connector.
4. Unplug the original video cable and insert the interface's two leads in between: one towards the unit and one towards the screen.
5. Connect the module to the CAN Bus with the supplied connector: that is what lets the rotary controller and steering wheel buttons control CarPlay and makes the new source appear in the menu.
6. Fit the microphone near the rear-view mirror or the pillar and hide the cable behind the roof trim.
7. If you are fitting a reversing camera, route its video cable to the tailgate along the side of the boot.
8. Reconnect the battery, open the new source and check CarPlay, sound and microphone before closing everything up.

The module hides behind the screen or under the console, so once you're done nothing is visible from the outside.

• MINI dealership: on the models that support it, enabling CarPlay is charged as an option —and there were years of annual subscriptions— and Android Auto still isn't available. On older F56, F55, F54, F57 and R60 cars there is simply no official retrofit.
