The Android head unit touchscreen is not responding: causes and fixes

Universal head unit with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto

You tap the music icon and nothing happens. Or you press one spot and the item next to it opens. Or half the screen responds and the other half is dead. It is one of the problems we hear about most and, fortunately, in most cases it has nothing to do with the screen itself: it has to do with the protective film still being on, with temperature, with a setting, or with the way you are touching it.

We will go through the causes in order, from the silliest and most common to the most serious, with the specific check to make at each step. The idea is that in ten minutes you will know whether it sorts itself out or whether the unit needs looking at.

1. The protective film and your hands

Screens leave the factory with a protective film on. Many people leave it there because it is almost invisible, and that film, once it lifts at a corner or traps bubbles, stops your finger making clean contact. Peel it off completely before assuming anything is broken.

Then two classics from the same family:

  • Wet hands or hand cream. A capacitive screen needs dry contact. With damp hands the touch spreads out and the unit cannot tell where you pressed.
  • Gloves. In winter this is the number one cause of "the touchscreen isn't working". Ordinary gloves do not conduct; you need touchscreen fingertips or a bare hand.
  • Touching too lightly or too fast. This is not a flagship phone: it works better if you rest your finger flat for half a second instead of jabbing with a fingernail.

2. Cold, heat and a screen in full sun

A car is the worst possible place for an electronic device. In summer sun the dashboard easily passes sixty degrees, and in winter the screen wakes up frozen. At both extremes the touch layer can go slow, jerky or stop responding for a while.

What to do: start the car, turn the climate control on and give it a few minutes. If the touch comes back once the cabin normalises, there is no fault; that is expected behaviour for a screen working outside its range. Day to day, a sunshade in summer and a couple of minutes of heating in winter solve it.

3. The screen has frozen, not died

Very often the touch does not respond because the system is locked up, not because the glass is faulty. The clue is clear: if the clock is not moving, if the music keeps playing but nothing reacts, or if the image is frozen, the problem is the system.

The sequence to try, in this order:

  1. Reset button. Almost every head unit has a tiny hole on the front: press it with a paperclip for a few seconds.
  2. Switch off and remove the ignition. Lock and unlock the car, wait a minute and start again so the unit powers down properly.
  3. Close the app that caused it. If it always freezes with the same application, the problem is that app, not the screen.

If the freezes keep coming back, the cause is usually different and we cover it separately in the Android head unit restarts or freezes.

4. Calibration and dead zones

If the touch works but lands offset — you press high and it registers slightly lower — what you need is calibration. In the system settings, under the display or factory section, there is a touch calibration option that asks you to tap several crosses in turn. Do it sitting in your normal driving position, not leaning in from outside, because the angle matters.

A dead zone is a different matter: a whole band that never responds while the rest works perfectly. That does not get fixed by calibrating and points to the touch layer or its ribbon cable, especially if there has been a knock, a lever used during fitting, or moisture. Here the unit needs checking.

5. A fault that looks like touch but is not

Before writing off the screen, rule out three situations that get mistaken for a broken touch layer:

  • You are inside CarPlay or Android Auto and the app does not allow that gesture. With the phone projected, the interface is controlled by the phone and some functions are locked while the car is moving, for safety. If the touch works fine outside CarPlay, there is nothing to repair.
  • Video is blocked while driving. It is not that it does not respond: that particular screen will not let you use it on the move. We cover it in can you watch YouTube or Netflix on your car screen?.
  • The steering wheel controls are dead but the touch works. Those are two independent things; the wheel is configured separately, in steering wheel controls with an Android head unit.

6. Updates and full storage

A system with its storage at the limit responds late to everything, and that sluggishness feels like a touchscreen that is not working. Go into the settings, look at the storage and delete what you do not use: apps installed and forgotten, duplicate maps, downloaded videos. With storage freed up, touch response improves immediately.

And if the screen has gone a long time without an update, it is worth doing: firmware updates fix exactly this kind of problem. The procedure is in how to update your car's Android head unit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a stylus?
Yes, as long as it is a soft, conductive tip, the kind made for phones. What you should never use is anything hard or pointed: it scratches and can damage the touch layer.

Are tempered glass protectors any good?
Yes, and they do protect well against dust and scratches. Choose one in the exact size of your screen: if air is trapped between the glass and the touch layer, accuracy suffers.

The screen gets wet when it rains and I get in with my phone in hand. Is that a problem?
Dry it with a microfibre cloth and that is it. What you should not do is spray glass cleaner directly: the liquid can seep in at the edges. Spray the cloth, never the screen.

I touch it and it responds a second later. Is that normal?
A slight delay when opening heavy apps is normal; a full second across the whole interface is not. It is usually full storage or too many apps running in the background.

None of this fixes it. What now?
Write to us explaining what you have tried and exactly what the screen does, with a short video if you can. From that we can tell whether it is configuration, wiring or a fault in the unit, and in that case it is handled under warranty.
