The Golf Sportsvan is one of those cars people buy with their head rather than their heart: the space and headroom of a compact MPV with the mechanicals and build quality of a Golf. It sold in large numbers to families and as a company car, and it is still a sought-after used buy precisely because the interior ages so well. What has not aged as well is the stereo. The screens of that era are small, the factory navigation is long out of date and, in many cars, there is simply no way to connect your phone at all. A dedicated screen radio for the Sportsvan solves all three problems at once, without changing the look of the dashboard.
Does the Golf Sportsvan have CarPlay as standard?
It depends on which infotainment unit your car has and on its model year. The Sportsvan was sold with three different systems: the Composition Touch or Composition Colour radio on entry-level trims, the Composition Media on most cars, and the Discover Media with navigation on the higher trims.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrived on those systems through App-Connect, which was a paid option on the Sportsvan and was not ticked on every car. That leaves three very common situations:
- Cars with Composition Colour or Composition Touch: no App-Connect and no way at all to mirror your phone.
- Cars with Composition Media or Discover Media without the App-Connect option: the screen is a touchscreen, but the CarPlay icon never appears.
- Cars with App-Connect: CarPlay and Android Auto do work, but only over a cable and on a 6.5 or 8 inch screen.
Volkswagen does not offer a software update that adds App-Connect to a car built without it, and there is no official way to turn the wired connection into a wireless one. That is why replacing the unit with a model-specific screen is the realistic route.
The solution: an Android screen radio for the Golf Sportsvan

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe Golf Sportsvan screen radio replaces the original unit with a 9 inch HD touchscreen, using a frame and wiring harness designed for the centre console of this model. It sits flush in the factory aperture, with no gaps and nothing stuck on top. Here is what it adds:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects by itself as soon as you start the car.
- GPS navigation with its own aerial, compatible with Google Maps and Waze, and it works even when the phone is not connected.
- Bluetooth with hands-free calling and music streaming.
- FM radio and playback over USB, Bluetooth and Spotify.
- A CAN Bus harness that keeps the original steering wheel controls and the vehicle information on screen.
- A free reversing camera, which switches on by itself when you select reverse.
- Three memory configurations: 1 GB + 16 GB, 2 GB + 32 GB or 4 GB + 64 GB.
If you plan to run navigation and music at the same time, the 2 GB or 4 GB RAM version is worth it: in a family car used every day you notice the extra smoothness from day one.
Golf Sportsvan compatibility: supported versions
The kit is designed for the Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan from 2016 to 2019, in other words the post-facelift car, which is the one with the centre console and trim surround shown in the product photos. Compatibility is determined by the shape of the dashboard and the radio connector, not by the engine, so it fits:
- Petrol TSI and diesel TDI versions, with manual or DSG gearboxes.
- Edition, Advance, Sport and R-Line trims.
- Cars with the Composition Colour, Composition Media or Discover Media navigation unit.
- Cars with and without factory App-Connect.
One detail to watch: the early Sportsvan has a slightly different console from the facelift. If your car is from the first phase, compare your dashboard carefully with the photos before ordering. If you have any doubt, send us a photo of your current radio on WhatsApp and we will confirm compatibility free of charge.
If you have the five-door hatchback instead, we also have guides for the Golf 7 and the Golf 6. And if you need something even roomier, take a look at the Volkswagen Sharan.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe radio comes with the Sportsvan-specific harness and the CAN Bus module already built in, so it is a plug & play fit: nothing in the original wiring has to be cut or spliced.
- Carefully prise off the centre console surround and unscrew the factory radio.
- Plug the harness of the new screen into the original connector of the car, with the CAN Bus module in line.
- Connect the radio aerial, the GPS aerial, the USB ports and, if you fit it, the reversing camera cable run to the tailgate.
- Seat the 9 inch screen in its frame and fix it into the original aperture.
- Check in the menu that the steering wheel controls respond, then pair the phone for CarPlay or Android Auto.
At an automotive electronics workshop the job takes one to two hours, a little longer if the camera cable is run. The kit includes a manual, so with some practical skill it can also be done at home. If a steering wheel button does not respond afterwards, our guide on steering wheel controls with an Android radio explains how to set them up.
How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Golf Sportsvan?
The dealer has no real option for adding CarPlay to a Sportsvan built without App-Connect: the unit would have to be swapped for another one from the original range and even then you would still have the small screen, no wireless connection and no camera. A universal aftermarket head unit means buying the frame, the steering wheel control adapter and the camera separately, and it rarely integrates as neatly into a console like the one in the Golf.
The model-specific Sportsvan radio includes the frame, the CAN Bus harness, the GPS aerial, the USB cables and the reversing camera in the same box. You can check the current price of each memory configuration directly on the product page.

Message us on WhatsApp with your make, model and year and we will tell you exactly which screen fits your car. We reply in minutes.
Talk to an expert on WhatsAppMy Sportsvan has App-Connect and wired CarPlay. Is it still worth changing the radio?
If you use the phone in the car every day, yes. You gain a wireless connection, a 9 inch screen that is far easier to read than the original, and navigation that does not depend on the phone.
Do I lose the steering wheel controls or the vehicle information?
No. The CAN Bus in the harness keeps volume, track skip and calls on the steering wheel, and the screen still shows the vehicle information.
What about the climate control and the parking sensors?
They are untouched. The climate control of the Sportsvan is independent of the radio, and the parking sensors keep beeping as before; if your car already displays them on screen, that is kept in most cases.
Can the original radio be refitted?
Yes. Since no wiring is cut, you simply unplug the harness and put the factory unit back, which is useful if you ever sell the car.
Does it fit a Golf Sportsvan imported from Germany?
Yes, as long as the console matches the photos. The system language is chosen in the menu of the radio itself, so imported cars are no problem.
