Radio screen CarPlay for Nissan X-Trail T30 (2000-2007): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

CarPlay and Android Auto radio screen for Nissan X-Trail Mk1 T30 (2000-2007)

The first-generation Nissan X-Trail was one of the SUVs that paved the way in Spain back when people still called them "soft-roaders". Roomy, with selectable four-wheel drive and very durable dCi diesel engines, it earned a reputation as a practical car for families, people who work in the countryside and drivers who didn't want to give up heading off the tarmac.

Many are still on the road with hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the clock and in great shape. What does give their age away is the sound system: a CD radio with no screen and no phone connectivity. That's why more and more T30 owners are going for a model-specific radio screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which brings the cabin up to date without touching anything else in the car.

Does the Nissan X-Trail T30 come with CarPlay as standard?

No. The X-Trail T30 was designed long before Apple CarPlay and Android Auto existed, so no car left the factory with them.

Depending on the trim level, it could be fitted with:

  • Factory CD radio in the centre console, with a segment display.
  • CD changer on some of the better-equipped versions.
  • Factory navigation on certain cars, with disc-based maps that are completely out of date today.
  • Steering wheel audio controls on the higher trims.
  • No Bluetooth or USB input on the vast majority of cars.

That means there's currently no way to make hands-free calls, listen to Spotify or follow a route on Google Maps without your phone sliding around the car.

The solution: an Android radio for the Nissan X-Trail T30

The model-specific radio screen for the first-generation X-Trail replaces the factory unit using an adapter frame made for the T30. It includes:

  • 9-inch IPS touchscreen built into the centre console.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: no plugging in cables every time you get in the car.
  • Android system with GPS navigation, WiFi and Bluetooth.
  • Hands-free calling and audio streaming from your phone.
  • FM/AM radio with RDS and a DSP processor to fine-tune the sound.
  • Works with the original steering wheel controls on cars that have them.
  • Built-in cooling fan, which matters in hot summers with the car parked in the sun.
  • Plug & play installation with the T30-specific frame included.

Nissan X-Trail T30 compatibility: supported versions

The kit is made for the entire first generation of the X-Trail:

  • Nissan X-Trail Mk1 (T30 chassis), from its launch until the arrival of the T31.
  • Cars from both before and after the mid-life facelift.
  • 2.2 Di and 2.2 dCi diesel engines and 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines.
  • Front-wheel drive and 4x4 versions.
  • Trims with the factory radio; if your car has factory navigation, it's best to check with us first.

Heads up: the T30 frame doesn't fit later generations. If your car is the next model, check out the guide for the Nissan X-Trail T31, and for the T32 there's a kit shared with the Qashqai.

Fitting it to the X-Trail T30 doesn't require any special tools and takes a couple of unhurried hours.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes.
  2. Remove the trim surrounding the radio with a plastic pry tool, carefully releasing the clips.
  3. Undo the screws on the factory radio and pull it out of the slot.
  4. Unplug the power, speaker and aerial connectors.
  5. Connect the new screen's wiring harness: thanks to the CAN Bus, the ignition, illumination and steering wheel control signals are all retained.
  6. Position the GPS antenna under the dashboard and the microphone near the headliner or rear-view mirror.
  7. Fit the T30 adapter frame and slot the screen into place.
  8. Reconnect the battery and test the sound, CarPlay or Android Auto, GPS and controls before refitting the trim.

There's no need to cut any of the car's wires, and you can keep the factory radio in case you ever want to return the car to its original state.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Nissan X-Trail T30?

Nissan doesn't offer any official CarPlay upgrade for the T30, so the dealership can't give you a factory solution. The usual alternative is to go to a car audio shop that fits a universal radio and charges separately for the frame, the harness, the steering control interface and the labour.

With a model-specific kit, the frame and wiring come ready-made for this car, so fitting is quicker and the finish looks factory-fitted. If you're up for doing it yourself, you save even more. The memory options and up-to-date price are on the product page.

Does it fit the X-Trail T31 or T32?
No. Each generation has its own dashboard and its own frame. This kit is for the T30 only.

My X-Trail has factory navigation. Will it work?
Cars with the original navigation system have different wiring. Send us a photo of your dashboard and we'll confirm compatibility.

Will I lose the steering wheel controls?
No. If your car has them, they're kept and can be set up from the radio's menu.

Does the screen get hot in summer?
It has a built-in cooling fan precisely to prevent overheating when the car is parked in the sun.

Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes. The radio supports a rear camera, and the image appears on the screen automatically when you put the car in reverse.
