The Nissan Patrol GR Y61 is one of the most respected off-roaders ever sold in Europe. A ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, a low-range transfer case and diesel engines that seem to last forever: that is why it is still the go-to vehicle for hunters, farmers, forest rangers, 4x4 trail enthusiasts and travellers crossing the desert. Many Patrol GRs have hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the clock, and their owners have no intention of replacing them.
Its weak spot, unsurprisingly, is the onboard electronics. The factory radio is nowhere near what we expect from a car today: no useful navigation, no convenient hands-free calling and no music from your phone. A dedicated radio screen for the Patrol Y61, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, brings the cabin up to date without losing the soul of this off-roader.
Does the Nissan Patrol Y61 have CarPlay as standard?
No. The Patrol GR Y61 never offered Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It is a 4x4 built to work hard and keep going, and its infotainment was very basic even on the highest trim levels.
Depending on the year and version, it could come with:
- Factory cassette or CD radio with a segment display.
- Basic speakers spread around the cabin.
- No Bluetooth on the vast majority of vehicles.
- No built-in sat nav, except for units fitted by dealers or specialist converters.
In practice, anyone who uses their Patrol off-road ends up with a phone in a holder, loose cables and a handheld GPS in the glovebox. All of that can be replaced by a single, neatly integrated screen.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe Patrol's dashboard is simple and sturdy, which makes it one of the most straightforward installs.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes.
- Remove the radio trim with a plastic pry tool.
- Take out the factory radio and disconnect the power, speaker and antenna leads.
- Connect the new screen's wiring harness: the CAN Bus adapter handles power-on, illumination and controls.
- Position the GPS antenna under the dashboard, somewhere with a clear view of the sky.
- Route the microphone up to the rear-view mirror or the driver's sun visor.
- Fit the rear camera if you plan to use one: very handy for hitching trailers.
- Mount the Y61 frame, secure the screen and reconnect the battery to test everything before closing up.
It is a plug & play installation: no vehicle wires are cut, and the original radio can be refitted whenever you like, something owners of well-preserved vehicles really appreciate.
How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Nissan Patrol Y61?
Nissan offers no official upgrade for the Patrol GR, so there is no factory solution at the dealership. The usual alternative is a car audio shop fitting a universal radio and charging separately for the frame, harness, steering wheel control interface and labour, often with results that don't look properly integrated.
The dedicated kit already includes a custom-fit frame and wiring, which shortens the installation and leaves a clean finish. Memory options and up-to-date pricing are on the product page.

Message us on WhatsApp with your make, model and year and we will tell you exactly which screen fits your car. We reply in minutes.
Talk to an expert on WhatsAppCan it handle the vibrations of dirt tracks and 4x4 trails?
The screen is bolted to the frame and the original opening, with no suction cups or mounts, so it stays solid even on rough tracks.
Does the navigation work without a signal?
Yes. The built-in GPS supports offline maps, ideal for trips through the backcountry or long off-road journeys.
Will it fit the Patrol Y60 or the Patrol Y62?
No. The earlier Y60 and the later Y62 have different dashboards. This kit is only for the Patrol GR Y61.
Can I add a front camera to see obstacles?
Yes. The radio has inputs for both a rear and a front camera, very useful for cresting ridges or manoeuvring through tight gaps.
Does it drain the battery when the car is parked?
No. The screen switches off with the ignition, just like the original radio.
