Spain has thousands of hybrids on the road with plenty of miles behind them: fleet and taxi Priuses, Auris HSD, Yaris Hybrid, Jazz, Vezel, C-HR or RAV4. Reliable, cheap-to-run cars, but with a head unit from another era: small screen, its own menus and neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto. The question that always arrives by WhatsApp is the same one: can you change the screen in a hybrid without touching anything in the electrical system? Yes, and here we explain how, with the screens available model by model.
Is it safe to change the radio in a hybrid or an electric car?
Yes, because the radio has nothing to do with the high-voltage side of the car. A hybrid has two separate electrical systems:
Not sure whether there is a screen for your car? Check the compatibility table by make and model: the 521 models we cover, with their years and the type of solution each one needs.
- The 12 V system, the usual one: lights, central locking, climate control and radio. The screen connects here, exactly as in a petrol car.
- The high-voltage system, identified by orange cables and locking connectors, which powers the electric motor. It is not touched and you do not route anything near it when fitting a screen.
Golden rule of the installation: if the cable is orange, it is not your cable. All the work happens at the original radio connector, in the dashboard, far away from the battery pack.

Talk to an expert on WhatsApp- The car can be running in silence. Before dismantling anything, switch the ignition fully off and check that the "READY" light is out: in a hybrid, silence does not mean it is switched off.
- The ignition is electronic. Many hybrids have no classic key position, so the screen needs the harness and, where applicable, the CAN Bus box for your model to know when to switch on and off. We explain it in what the CAN Bus is.
- Standby consumption matters. The 12 V battery in a hybrid is small. If the car is going to sit for weeks, the screen should be set up to switch off completely; we cover it in the Android head unit drains the battery.
- The hybrid and consumption data stay where they are. The energy monitor in the instrument cluster keeps working; what changes is the radio, not the car's electronics.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppMany recent hybrids have a fixed screen, bonded to the dashboard and with the climate control or the energy monitor inside it. There you do not change the radio: you add a CarPlay interface, which connects behind it and keeps the original screen and menus.
- CarPlay interface for Toyota Yaris, C-HR, RAV4, Corolla and Camry
- CarPlay interface for BMW i3 I01 (2013-2020), the best-selling pure electric car of its time in Spain.
If you want to understand the difference before deciding, we compare them in model-specific vs universal screen and in the CarPlay interfaces collection.
What is the installation like in a hybrid?
- Switch the car fully off and wait for the READY light to go out. If you are going to work for a while, disconnect the negative terminal of the 12 V battery.
- Remove the trim and the radio with plastic tools. Step by step in how to remove the factory radio.
- Connect the model-specific harness to the original connector: plug & play, with no cutting and without going anywhere near an orange cable.
- Connect the CAN Bus if your model requires it, for the steering wheel controls, the sensors and correct switch-on.
- Fit the fascia and slot the screen in.
- Test everything before closing up: CarPlay, Android Auto, radio, steering wheel controls, camera and, in the cluster, that no new warning appears.
Frequently asked questions

Message us on WhatsApp with your make, model and year and we will tell you exactly which screen fits your car. We reply in minutes.
Talk to an expert on WhatsAppDoes it affect consumption or the hybrid battery?
No. The screen is powered from the 12 V system, like the radio it replaces, and plays no part in managing the hybrid system or charging the traction battery.
Do you lose the energy monitor or the consumption display?
No, because that information lives in the instrument cluster. What does disappear is the energy flow graphic if it was inside the original radio; in that case an interface is usually the better option.
Does it work in a pure electric car?
It depends on the model. Many electric cars already come with CarPlay or Android Auto from the factory and nothing needs doing; in those that do not, like the BMW i3, the route is the interface. Write to us with the model and we will confirm.
Can I use it with the car parked and charging?
Yes, just like the original radio: if the car lets you leave the accessories on, the screen works. Keep the 12 V battery in mind if you do it for a long time.
Does it pass the roadworthiness test?
An aftermarket radio fitted in the original aperture is not a major modification. We cover it in do Android CarPlay screens pass the Spanish ITV test?
