How to connect your phone to the car radio by Bluetooth: music and hands-free calls

Car screen with Bluetooth for connecting your phone to the car

Bluetooth is the most used function of any car radio and, at the same time, the one that generates the most support calls. "The music plays but calls do not come through", "it connects at home but not in the car", "it pairs with one phone and not with my wife's". These are small faults, almost always down to settings, and they are solved once you understand how the connection works.

In this guide we explain how to pair your phone with the unit properly, what the difference is between plain Bluetooth and CarPlay or Android Auto, and what to do when something will not work.

How to pair your phone with the radio step by step

The process is the same on almost every Android screen on the market:

  1. Start the car and leave the unit idle, with nothing playing. It is important to do this with the vehicle stationary.
  2. Open the Bluetooth menu on the unit and switch on visibility. Some screens call it "search device" or "pair".
  3. On the phone, go into Bluetooth settings and look for the unit's name in the list. It is usually a manufacturer code or a generic name such as "CAR-KIT".
  4. Accept the code on both sides. If a PIN is requested, the usual ones are 0000 or 1234.
  5. Allow the permissions the phone asks for: contacts, call history and messages. Without them, your address book will not appear on the screen.
  6. Test the two things separately: make a test call and play a song. They are two different functions and can fail independently.

If all has gone well, the next time you start the car the connection will happen on its own in a few seconds, without touching anything.

This is where half the problems come from. Bluetooth is not a single connection: it is several "profiles" travelling over the same antenna.

  • The audio profile carries music, podcasts and navigation sound from the phone to the car's speakers.
  • The hands-free profile manages calls: it uses the car's microphone and a much lower audio quality, because it only carries voice.
  • The phonebook profile copies contacts and the call log to the screen.

That is why Spotify can play perfectly while calls do not work: the phone has authorised one profile and not the other. The fix is to open the device entry in the phone's Bluetooth settings and tick every box (audio, calls, contacts).

Bluetooth, CarPlay and Android Auto: how they differ

People often confuse them, and it is worth separating them because they solve different things:

  • Plain Bluetooth sends sound and calls to the car, but the screen does not show the phone's apps. You see the cover art, the track title and little else.
  • CarPlay and Android Auto project the phone's interface onto the screen: maps, music, messages and the voice assistant, all operated from the car. In the wireless versions Bluetooth is precisely what starts the connection, and the bulk of the data then travels over WiFi.

Put another way: Bluetooth is the bare minimum and CarPlay or Android Auto are the full experience. If you are deciding between a wired or wireless connection, we compare them in CarPlay wired versus wireless.

It cannot find the unit when searching. Switch the phone's Bluetooth off and on, and check that the screen is in visible mode. If the phone was paired before, delete it from the list and start from scratch.

It connects and disconnects by itself. This is usually power or interference: a poor-quality charger in the 12 V socket or a badly made USB cable generates electrical noise. If the screen also switches off or freezes, see why an Android car radio restarts or freezes.

People hear me badly or with echo. The microphone is nearly always the cause: it sits inside the screen's frame, behind the dashboard plastic, and picks up more noise than voice. It is fixed with an external microphone placed near the rear-view mirror. We cover it in depth in people hear me badly on calls.

The music is quiet or low quality. Check that the phone's volume is up (there are two independent volumes, the phone's and the unit's) and that the active source is Bluetooth audio and not hands-free. For a real step up, the way forward is the equaliser and a DSP amplifier.

Contacts do not appear. That is a phone permission. In the paired device's entry, enable "share contacts" and connect again; on some phones there is a prompt that only appears the first time.

Two phones will not connect. Many units keep several devices in memory but only one connected at a time; others allow two at once, one for calls and one for music. If two people share the car, the practical approach is to switch off Bluetooth on the phone that is not in use.

Tips so it works first time, every time

  • Pair once and pair properly. Repeating the pairing without deleting the previous one leaves duplicate entries that clash with each other.
  • Clean up the device list from time to time. Units store a limited number and, once full, stop accepting new ones.
  • Leave Bluetooth switched on on the phone. Battery-saving apps that turn it off by themselves are a frequent cause of "it did not connect today".
  • If you use the steering wheel buttons, set them up to answer and end calls: it is the most convenient and the safest option. The process is in steering wheel buttons with an Android car radio.

Can I listen to music over Bluetooth while using Android Auto by cable?
There is no need: when Android Auto is active, the phone's audio already goes through the screen. Mixing both connections is exactly what makes the sound jump from one source to another.

Does the unit's Bluetooth use data?
No. Bluetooth is a local link between the phone and the car. Data is used by the phone's apps, such as Spotify or Waze, just as it would be on foot.

Can Bluetooth be used to send messages?
Android units read notifications if the phone allows it, but the convenient and legal way to reply is by voice with CarPlay or Android Auto, as we explain in WhatsApp on the car screen.

Can my older car have Bluetooth?
Yes. Every screen in our catalogue includes it, even in cars that originally came with a CD radio. In fact, it is one of the most common reasons for changing the unit.

Do I lose the factory Bluetooth when fitting a new screen?
The original system's Bluetooth stops being used, because the new unit replaces the previous one and brings its own. Calls and music are handled by the new screen from then on.

RCA cable and external microphone for hands-free calling in the car

All our screens include Bluetooth for music and hands-free calling. If there is no model-specific unit for your car, the universal screen with CarPlay and Android Auto is the direct option, and the RCA cable with external microphone is the accessory that fixes calls in a noisy car. The rest is in the full catalogue: tell us the make, model and year and we will confirm which one fits.
