Few vehicles have as many lives as a T5. The same Typ 7H is the work van that racks up 400,000 km without complaining, the Caravelle that carries nine people and the basis of half the campers on the road. What has hardly ever changed in them is the radio: the standard RCD with its two-line display, or the CD navigation that stopped being updated years ago. A screen radio with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto uses the 2-DIN slot the dashboard already has and brings the cab up to date without any surgery.
Does the Volkswagen T5 have CarPlay as standard?
No. The T5 was sold with the RCD 200, RCD 300, RCD 310 and RCD 510 radios, and with the RNS 310 and RNS 510 navigation units on better equipped versions. They all predate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so they neither include them nor can they be activated with an update. The RNS 510, the top of the range at the time, navigates with maps on a hard drive that are now out of date and has no way of projecting the phone.
On the commercial versions, what you usually find is the most basic radio, sometimes with front speakers only. To have CarPlay in a T5 the only route is replacing the unit with an Android screen made for its dashboard.

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppThe model-specific radio fills the 2-DIN slot with a black fascia made to measure for the T5 dashboard, integrated with the climate controls and the original switches. What it brings:
- 9-inch IPS QLED touchscreen, with good contrast even with the sun straight on such an upright windscreen.
- Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects on its own, with no cables across the dashboard.
- Eight-core Android with GPS and offline navigation, handy on mountain routes or in areas with no coverage.
- WiFi (with a 4G LTE option), Bluetooth hands-free and a separate microphone, which makes a real difference to calls in a van cab.
- DSP with equaliser to get the most out of the standard speakers, usually modest in a T5.
- Keeps the steering wheel controls thanks to the CAN Bus adapter included.
- Rear and front camera inputs: in a van with no rear window, a camera stops being a luxury.
- Three memory configurations: 1 GB + 16 GB, 2 GB + 32 GB or 4 GB + 64 GB.
The kit includes the ISO wiring, the CAN Bus adapter, the external GPS module, the microphone, the USB extension cable and the screws, so there are no accessories to buy separately.
T5 compatibility: supported versions
The fascia and wiring are made for the whole T5 family, in both phases:
- Volkswagen Transporter T5, as a panel van, crew van and double cab.
- Volkswagen Multivan T5 (Typ 7H).
- Volkswagen Caravelle T5.
- The phase before the facelift and the one after, with the more stretched headlights.
It fits the trims with a 2-DIN slot, which is most of them. The detail to check is what unit you have now: if your T5 has the large integrated navigation system or a special trim panel, compare your console with the compatibility image in the product gallery. The quickest way to be sure is to send us a photo of your dashboard over WhatsApp: we will confirm free of charge whether the fascia is the right one.
If your van is the next generation, with a redesigned dashboard and a screen integrated from the factory, the approach changes and an interface is usually used instead of a full screen. We explain it in our guide to screens for vans and campers.
What is the installation like?

Talk to an expert on WhatsAppIt is a plug & play job: no wire of the vehicle is cut.
- The console trim, held by clips, is removed and the screws of the original radio are undone.
- The ISO connector (power and speakers) and the aerial are unplugged. On T5s with an amplifier the aerial is a twin Fakra type, so watch out for the two connectors.
- The screen's harness is plugged into the original connector with the CAN Bus adapter in between, which keeps the steering wheel controls and the vehicle signals.
- The external GPS module and the microphone are fitted, ideally near the interior mirror.
- If a rear camera is fitted, the cable runs through the interior to the tailgate or the brake light.
- The screen and its fascia are clipped in, switched on and the phone is paired to use CarPlay or Android Auto.
At a car electronics workshop the job takes around an hour, a little more with a camera. If your T5 already had a factory camera, you can keep it with an adapter: we cover this in the factory camera interface for Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda.
How much does CarPlay cost in a T5?
Volkswagen does not offer any unit with CarPlay for the T5: the RNS systems of its era are no longer made and the official service fits nothing that projects the phone in this vehicle. That leaves the universal radio with a generic fascia, which looks cheaper on paper but means buying the fascia, the steering wheel control adapter and the camera separately, and it rarely ends up well finished in such a large console.
The T5-specific radio arrives with everything in the box and looks like factory equipment. You can see the current price of each memory version on the product page.

Message us on WhatsApp with your make, model and year and we will tell you exactly which screen fits your car. We reply in minutes.
Talk to an expert on WhatsAppDoes it work the same for the Transporter, Multivan and Caravelle?
Yes. All three share the Typ 7H dashboard and the same connectors, so the kit is identical. The use changes, not the installation.
My T5 has the RNS 510 navigation, can I replace it?
Yes, it is replaced like any other 2-DIN unit. You lose the old factory navigation, but you gain CarPlay, Android Auto and up-to-date navigation from your phone or from the screen itself.
Do I keep the steering wheel controls and the trip computer?
Yes. The CAN Bus adapter keeps the steering wheel controls, and the trip computer in the instrument cluster remains independent of the radio.
My T5 is converted into a camper, is it any use for the rear audio?
The screen powers the cab speakers. If you have speakers or an amplifier in the living area, they can be connected to the radio's preamplified RCA outputs.
Can I refit the original radio?
Yes, because nothing is cut. If you keep the fascia and the factory unit, the T5 can be returned to its original state whenever you want.
