CarPlay Screen Radio for the Toyota RAV4 Mk2 XA20 (2000-2005): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Toyota RAV4 Mk2 XA20 2000-2005 - CarPlay and Android Auto Screen Radio

The second-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA20 chassis) is one of those cars that simply refuses to retire. Bulletproof mechanicals, straightforward all-wheel drive and a compact body that still works perfectly day to day: that is why so many of them are still on the road, many with over 300,000 km and running like new.

The only thing that gives away its age is the dashboard. Where you would expect a touchscreen today, the RAV4 XA20 has a cassette or CD radio with a small orange segment display. No navigation, no decent hands-free system and certainly no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The good news is that the slot is a standard double DIN, and a modern Android screen radio fits right in, completely transforming the interior.

Does the Toyota RAV4 XA20 have CarPlay as standard?

No. No version of the second-generation RAV4 left the factory with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto: those technologies came long after this model. Depending on trim and market, it was fitted with:

  • Single-DIN cassette or CD radio with a segment display, on entry-level trims.
  • CD radio with a 6-disc changer and a basic equaliser, on higher trims.
  • Toyota navigation with a small screen and map CDs, very rare in European cars and practically useless today.

In none of these cases is there any real phone connection, beyond perhaps a Bluetooth hands-free kit added later. And if your car still has the original cassette deck, the only way to play music from your phone is with an adapter and a dangling cable.

The solution: an Android radio for the Toyota RAV4 XA20

The model-specific Android screen radio for the RAV4 XA20 replaces the original unit using the double-DIN slot in the console, with a fascia designed for this dashboard. The result is a large, integrated screen with no gaps, far removed from the usual generic radio bodge.

Here is what you gain:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay: your iPhone connects on its own as soon as you start the car, with no cables.
  • Android Auto, also wireless, with Google Maps, Waze, Spotify and voice messaging.
  • A large touchscreen with high resolution and instant response, instead of the original segment display.
  • Navigation with live traffic and always up-to-date maps, with no update discs to pay for.
  • Reversing camera input with dynamic guidelines: extremely useful on an SUV with a spare wheel on the tailgate.
  • Working steering wheel controls on cars that have them, thanks to the included CAN Bus module.
  • Bluetooth, WiFi, USB and amplifier output, plus a 4G SIM slot on the versions that include it.
  • Split screen so you can keep navigation and music in view at the same time.

For a car used in the mountains, at the beach and on weekend trips, having your phone's navigation projected full screen is the best value upgrade you can make.

RAV4 XA20 compatibility: supported versions

The radio is designed for the second-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA20) throughout its whole production run (2000-2005), including the later facelift.

  • Body styles: 3-door (XA21) and 5-door (XA22), in both short and long versions.
  • Engines: it makes no difference. The 1.8 and 2.0 VVT-i petrol units and the 2.0 D-4D diesel share the same centre console.
  • Trims: from entry-level versions to higher trims with automatic climate control.
  • Drivetrain: valid on both 2WD and 4WD versions.
  • Steering: designed for left-hand drive vehicles, like those sold in Europe.

If your RAV4 has the factory navigation system with the screen built into the upper part of the console, the layout is different. Send us a photo of your dashboard and we will check it with you before you buy anything.

What is the installation like?

It is a plug & play installation: everything connects to the car's original plug through an adapter, with no cutting or splicing of the vehicle wiring.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
  2. Remove the console trim with a plastic tool, releasing the clips from the bottom up so you do not mark the dashboard.
  3. Undo the original radio screws and pull the unit towards you.
  4. Unplug the connectors for power, speakers and aerial from the original unit.
  5. Connect the adapter harness of the new radio and the CAN Bus module, which is what keeps the steering wheel controls and the reverse signal working where the car has them.
  6. Position the GPS aerial somewhere with a clear view of the sky, usually under the dashboard near the windscreen.
  7. Reconnect the battery and test everything: sound from all four speakers, radio stations, Bluetooth, CarPlay, GPS and the camera if you fit one.
  8. Fit the screen with its fascia and refit the trim.

Taken calmly, the whole job takes a little over an hour. On cars of this age it is also worth checking the condition of the aerial and the speaker connectors, which are often corroded.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Toyota RAV4 XA20?

At an official dealer there is no solution at all: Toyota does not offer any update that adds CarPlay or Android Auto to a RAV4 of this generation, because its electronics predate those systems. The only thing they can suggest is fitting a generic aftermarket unit, paying separately for the fascia, the wiring and the labour.

The model-specific Android screen radio works out far better: it comes with the fascia for the model and the wiring you need, it is installed once and it adds navigation, camera input and wireless phone projection. You will find the current price and the available configurations on the product page.

Does the screen fit the RAV4 XA20 slot without cutting the dashboard?
Yes. The console slot is double DIN and the fascia supplied with the radio is designed for this model, so there is no need to cut or force any plastics.

Do the steering wheel controls still work?
On cars fitted with them from the factory, yes: the included CAN Bus module keeps volume, track change and phone controls working from the wheel.

My RAV4 has the 6-CD changer. Do I lose it?
Yes, the original unit comes out completely. In exchange you gain USB, Bluetooth, streaming and all the music on your phone, which more than replaces the disc changer.

Can I fit a reversing camera with the spare wheel on the tailgate?
Yes. It is a very common installation on the RAV4: the camera goes next to the number plate or on the tailgate itself and connects to the radio's video input.

Can I refit the original radio if I sell the car?
Yes. Since no wires are cut, you simply unplug the adapter and refit the factory unit. Keep the original radio and its screws.
