CarPlay Screen Radio for Subaru Legacy and Outback BL/BP (2003-2009): How to Install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Subaru Legacy Outback Mk4 BL BP 2003-2009 - CarPlay and Android Auto Screen Radio

The Subaru Legacy and its rugged version, the Outback, remain a source of pride for their drivers: symmetrical all-wheel drive, a boxer engine and a reliability that still surprises. What has not aged as well is the original mid-2000s radio, with no modern Bluetooth, no touchscreen and no phone connection. If you own one, there is a simple way to bring it up to date.

Do the Subaru Legacy and Outback have CarPlay as standard?

No. The fourth generation of the Legacy and the Outback (codes BL and BP, built between 2003 and 2009) predates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto by a long way. From the factory it has a CD radio with a small monochrome display, with no connected navigation. The way to add these features is to replace the radio with an Android screen radio designed for this dashboard.

The solution: an Android radio for the Subaru Legacy and Outback

The Legacy/Outback BL-BP screen radio from PantallasPremium blends into the original slot and brings:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • HD touchscreen, much larger than the original
  • Built-in GPS, compatible with Google Maps and Waze
  • Bluetooth and hands-free calls
  • FM radio and playback via USB, Bluetooth and Spotify
  • Steering wheel controls kept via CAN Bus
  • Two USB ports

For a car built for travelling and leaving the tarmac, having navigation with up-to-date maps and cable-free music is a notable change.

Subaru Legacy and Outback compatibility: supported versions

  • Subaru Legacy Mk4 (BL/BP), from 2003 to 2009
  • Subaru Outback Mk3 (BL/BP), from 2003 to 2009
  • Saloon and estate (Touring Wagon) bodies

Check that the frame of your dashboard matches the photos on the product page. Later versions (2010 onwards) and other generations have a different console design. If in doubt, send us a photo of your dashboard and we will help you confirm the model.

  1. Disconnect the battery of the car.
  2. Remove the frame of the centre console and the original radio with plastic tools.
  3. Connect the plug & play harness to the new radio: power, speakers, antenna and CAN Bus, without cutting cables.
  4. Plug in the antenna and the steering wheel controls adapter.
  5. Mount the screen in the slot and refit the frame.
  6. Pair your phone and CarPlay or Android Auto start without cables.

Being plug & play and reversible, it does not damage the car and you lose nothing original. A car audio shop can do it quickly if you prefer not to do it yourself.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in the Subaru Legacy or Outback?

Subaru offers no official CarPlay upgrade for a model of this era, so the dealer is not a realistic alternative. Universal radios require adapting frames and cables, which makes fitting more expensive and does not always look well integrated. The PantallasPremium radio arrives ready for this model with plug & play connectors. See the current price on the product page.
