The second-generation Renault Twingo is one of those cars that stays in the family for years: small, easy to park, cheap to run and with a surprisingly practical interior for its size. It is the typical city car, student car or second car, which is why so many are still on the road. Its weak point is the radio: a simple unit designed for CDs and little else, forcing you to keep your phone in a holder to use navigation or stream music. Does the Renault Twingo have CarPlay as standard?

No. The Twingo II was designed before Apple CarPlay and Android Auto existed, and no version came with them from the factory. Depending on the trim, it had a CD radio with a text display, in some units with basic Bluetooth for calls and an auxiliary or USB input. There is no touchscreen, no built-in navigation and no way to see your phone's apps on the dashboard. Renault does not offer any official update to add CarPlay to this model either, so the only way to get it is to replace the original radio.

Renault Twingo compatibility: supported versions

The kit is compatible with the second-generation Renault Twingo, listed for the years 2005-2013, with the dashboard shown in the product photos. It works with all petrol and diesel engines and with the sporty versions, because compatibility depends on the shape of the centre console, not on the engine.

• Three-door Twingo II in its different trims.
• Units before and after the facelift, as long as the console matches the one in the photos.

It is not compatible with the first-generation Twingo or with the rear-engined Twingo III, which have completely different dashboards. Before buying, compare the shape of your console with the images on the product page and, if you have any doubt, send us a photo of the radio and we will confirm whether it fits.

What is the installation like?

The kit comes with the specific wiring and the CAN Bus box, so installation is plug & play, with no cutting or splicing of cables:

1. Remove the centre console trims and take out the original radio.
2. Connect the specific wiring to the Twingo's original connector, with the CAN Bus box in between.
3. Connect the radio aerial, the GPS antenna, the USB cable and, if desired, the rear-view camera.
4. Fix the screen to the adapter frame and fit it into the dashboard opening.
5. Set up the CAN Bus in the radio settings and pair your phone to use CarPlay or Android Auto.

In a car electronics workshop, fitting takes between one and two hours. If you are handy with trim panels, you can do it yourself following the included manual; the most time-consuming part is usually routing the rear camera cable to the tailgate.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Renault Twingo?

There is no option at the dealership: Renault does not sell any official CarPlay kit for the Twingo II, and looking for a more modern factory radio as a spare or from a scrapyard does not add CarPlay because none ever had it. The usual alternative in car audio shops is a branded universal radio with a generic frame, which on this dashboard tends to look less finished and requires buying the steering control adapter, the frame and the camera separately. Frequently asked questions

Do the radio controls next to the steering wheel still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus box lets you keep controlling the volume, skipping tracks and handling calls from the Twingo's satellite control.

Do I lose FM radio?
No. The screen has its own FM tuner and connects to the car's original aerial.

Can I use wired CarPlay if my iPhone has problems wirelessly?

Does it fit the current rear-engined Twingo?
No. The Twingo III has a different dashboard; this kit is exclusive to the second-generation Twingo.

Will it pass the vehicle inspection with the screen installed?
