CarPlay Screen for Porsche: compatibility and installation guide, model by model

A used Porsche Cayenne is still a lot of car: strong engines, plenty of chassis and build quality that stands the test of time. What does not stand up as well is the infotainment system. The PCM of those generations has a small screen, graphics that look dated today, navigation maps whose updates are hard to justify and, of course, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto.

Does the Porsche have CarPlay as standard?

Only the most recent ones. On the Cayenne generations that dominate the used market today the answer is no:

• Cayenne 955 and 957 (the first generation and its facelift): radio with CD and, depending on trim, PCM with DVD navigation. Small screen, slow menus and no phone connectivity beyond, at best, Bluetooth for calls.
• Cayenne 958: a more modern PCM with a touchscreen and hard-drive navigation, but no CarPlay or Android Auto on the vast majority of cars. Updating the maps officially costs what it costs, and the phone still stays out.

And as with every premium brand: if the car left the factory without CarPlay, it cannot be activated through software. The original unit does not have the necessary hardware, so neither the official service nor a diagnostic tool can solve it. The only real solution is to replace the unit.

The solution: a model-specific Android screen for the Porsche Cayenne

What is the installation like on a Porsche Cayenne?

Fitting is plug & play: it connects to the original connectors, with no cutting or splicing.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching anything.
2. Remove the centre console trim with a plastic pry tool, taking care with the mouldings.
3. Undo the screws of the original unit and pull it out with its connectors.
4. Plug the specific harness into the factory connector. The CAN-Bus translates the car's signals so the steering wheel controls, the parking sensors and the camera keep working.
5. If your Cayenne has fibre-optic audio, add the decoder into that loop to keep the amplifier.
6. If you are adding a rear camera, run the video cable along the side up to the tailgate.
7. Fit the screen with its fascia, screw it in, reconnect the battery and start the car.
8. Pair your phone over Bluetooth the first time: after that CarPlay and Android Auto connect on their own.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Porsche?

Officially there is no update that adds CarPlay to a PCM that shipped without it: the closest thing is replacing the whole system with a later-generation one, with a genuine part, coding and labour. It is by far the most expensive option, and on the older generations it is not even available.

Frequently asked questions about CarPlay in a Porsche

Can CarPlay be activated on a Cayenne without changing the radio?

No. If the car left the factory without CarPlay, the original PCM does not have the necessary hardware and there is no activation via diagnostics. The unit has to be replaced with a model-specific screen.

What happens to the sound system if my Cayenne uses fibre optics?

It is retained by adding the fibre-optic decoder, which closes the amplifier loop and lets the new screen control it. If your car does not use that type of connection, it is not needed.

Does the vertical screen for the 2010-2018 Cayenne fit the console properly?

Yes, it is mounted over the original opening with its specific fascia, in the vertical format that makes the most of that console's height. No plastics need cutting.

Are the steering wheel controls and parking sensors retained?

Yes. The harness includes the specific CAN-Bus, which keeps the steering wheel controls, the rear sensors and the original camera if the car has one.

Does the navigation work without mobile data?

Yes. The screen has its own GPS and supports offline Google Maps or Waze maps, so you do not depend on coverage.
