CarPlay Screen Radio for Opel Meriva B (2008-2017): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The Opel Meriva B earned its place in thousands of garages for one very specific reason: its rear-hinged FlexDoors, which turn strapping a child into a seat or helping an older passenger climb in into a two-second job. It is a practical car, with a good seating height, plenty of boot space and a reliability record that keeps many units on the road every single day.

The problem is that the part that has aged worst is the infotainment. The Meriva B centre console, with its rotary knob and its monochrome or low-resolution display, was designed when carrying a CD in the glovebox was normal. Today, when you want the navigation to dodge a traffic jam, Spotify to pick up where you left off and the car to read your messages out loud, that radio falls far short. The answer is an Android radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto made to measure for the Meriva B opening.

Does the Opel Meriva B have CarPlay as standard?

No. Throughout its commercial life the Meriva B was fitted with the CD 300, CD 400 and Navi 600 / Navi 900 systems, plus the basic CD 30 radio in entry trims. None of them includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto: they all predate both protocols.

Opel did introduce the IntelliLink system with CarPlay and Android Auto, but it arrived with the Corsa E, the Astra K and the Mokka, not with the Meriva B, which ended production with the previous electronics. And while the Navi 600 and Navi 900 do include their own navigation, their maps are sold on SD card and updated at a premium, with a slow interface and an address search that takes far too many turns of the knob to type a street name.

There is no official retrofit either: no IntelliLink unit fits the Meriva B dashboard, so the factory route is simply closed. All Opel ever offered was the phone cradle with the Navi app, which is neither CarPlay nor anything like it.

On a family car like this one, the biggest practical leap is the rear camera. The Meriva B is short but tall, and reverse parking with the rear seats occupied leaves little visibility; seeing the guide lines on screen changes the manoeuvre completely.

Opel Meriva B compatibility: supported versions

The screen is developed for the second generation of the MPV:

• Opel Meriva B in full, including pre- and post-facelift units.
• All trims: Essentia, Expression, Selective, Excellence and Cosmo.
• 1.4 petrol and 1.4 Turbo, 1.3 CDTI, 1.6 CDTI and 1.7 CDTI engines, with manual or automatic gearbox.
• Units with CD 30, CD 300, CD 400, Navi 600 and Navi 900 radios.
• Also compatible with LPG versions and with cars fitted with a multifunction steering wheel.

The quick check before buying: look at the front of your current radio and count the buttons around the rotary knob. If your console is the typical Meriva B one with the trapezoidal button layout, the frame fits. If in doubt, send us a photo of the dashboard and we will confirm it.

What is the installation like?

It is plug & play: no vehicle cables to cut or splice. With basic tools it takes under an hour at home.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the centre console trim with a plastic pry tool, starting at the edges so you do not mark the surround.
3. Undo the original radio screws and pull it straight towards you.
4. Unplug the main ISO connector, the aerial and, if fitted, the navigation or CD changer cable.
5. Connect the harness and the CAN Bus decoder to the new screen: this is the part that keeps the steering wheel controls, the clock and the ignition signals alive.
6. Plug the assembly into the vehicle connector, attach the aerial and run the rear camera cable to the tailgate if you are fitting one.
7. Reconnect the battery and test sound, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and CarPlay before closing anything up.
8. Fit the screen into its frame, screw it in and refit the trim.

Do I lose the steering wheel controls on my Meriva?
No. The included CAN Bus decoder keeps volume, track skip, phone and mute working exactly as they did with the original radio.

Do the trip computer and the parking sensor warning still work?
Yes. All that information is shown in the instrument cluster, which is not modified, and the parking sensors keep beeping as before.

My Meriva has the Navi 600 with SD maps, can I keep using them?
Once the unit is replaced, navigation is handled by Google Maps or Waze, which update themselves at no cost. That is precisely why most owners make the change.

Does a rear camera fit on the Meriva tailgate?
Yes. It mounts above the number plate or in the tailgate handle and connects to the video cable running to the screen; the image appears on its own when you select reverse.

Is it reversible if I sell the car?
Completely. As no cable is cut, you just unplug the harness and refit the original radio in a few minutes.
