CarPlay Radio Screen for Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2017-2022): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2017-2022 - CarPlay and Android Auto Radio Screen

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross arrived to take on the best-selling compact SUVs with an eye-catching coupé design, available all-wheel drive and, later on, a plug-in hybrid version. It is a modern car, but its multimedia system has fallen behind what any phone offers today: a small screen, a wired-only connection on the versions that have one, and no built-in navigation on many units. If you want wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, integrated GPS and a larger screen, the dedicated radio screen for the Eclipse Cross is the cleanest way to get them without changing the look of the dashboard.

Does the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross have CarPlay as standard?

It depends on the trim. Many Eclipse Cross units come with Mitsubishi's Smartphone Link Display Audio screen, which does support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but only via cable and with a rather small screen for a car of this size. Entry-level versions have a simpler radio with Bluetooth and USB, without any phone mirroring. In both cases there is no official update that adds a wireless connection or a navigation system that works without the phone.

That is why many owners look for a radio upgrade: some because their version has no CarPlay, and others because, even though it has it, they are tired of plugging in the phone on every trip and want a larger screen.

The radio screen for the Eclipse Cross replaces the original unit with a 9-inch HD touchscreen with a frame and harness designed specifically for its centre console. These are its features:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: the phone connects automatically when you start the car.
  • GPS navigation with its own antenna, compatible with Google Maps and Waze.
  • Bluetooth hands-free for calls and music.
  • FM radio and playback via USB, Bluetooth and Spotify.
  • CAN Bus wiring to keep the original steering wheel controls.
  • Vehicle information on screen.
  • Two USB connections to charge your phone or play music from a USB stick.
  • Free reversing camera, which switches on automatically when you engage reverse.
  • Three memory configurations: 1 GB + 16 GB, 2 GB + 32 GB or 4 GB + 64 GB.

If you are going to use navigation and music at the same time, we recommend the 2 GB or 4 GB RAM version: with several apps open, you will notice the difference in smoothness.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross compatibility: supported versions

The kit is compatible with the first-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2017-2022). Compatibility is determined by the shape of the centre console and the radio connector, not the engine, so it fits:

  • Petrol versions with front-wheel drive or 4WD.
  • Trims with a basic radio, with Bluetooth and USB.
  • Trims with the factory Smartphone Link Display Audio screen.

The Eclipse Cross received a facelift with the arrival of the plug-in hybrid, which changed the front end and the central screen. If your car is from that last stage, carefully compare your dashboard with the product photos before buying. If in doubt, send us a photo of your current radio via WhatsApp and we will confirm compatibility for free.

If you have a larger Mitsubishi, we also have a guide for the Mitsubishi Outlander 3, the brand's seven-seat SUV.

The radio comes with the Eclipse Cross-specific harness and built-in CAN Bus, so there is no need to cut or splice any wires:

  1. The centre console trims are carefully removed and the original radio is unscrewed.
  2. The new radio's harness is connected to the car's original connector, with the CAN Bus already included.
  3. The radio antenna, GPS antenna, USB cables and, if fitted, the reversing camera are connected.
  4. The screen is fitted into the adapter frame and secured in the original slot.
  5. In the radio menu you check that the steering wheel controls respond and pair your phone for CarPlay or Android Auto.

At a car electronics workshop, fitting takes one to two hours, a little longer if the camera cable is also routed to the tailgate. The kit includes instructions, so if you are handy you can also do it yourself.

How much does it cost to install CarPlay in a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?

The dealership has no option to upgrade from the basic radio to a CarPlay screen, nor to turn wired CarPlay into wireless. Switching to the official screen from another trim means an expensive spare part and still gives you no wireless connection or built-in navigation. A universal car audio radio, on the other hand, requires buying the frame, steering wheel adapter and camera separately, and it rarely looks as integrated in a console as distinctive as the Eclipse Cross's.

The dedicated radio includes the frame, the CAN Bus harness, the GPS antenna, the USB cables and the reversing camera in the same box. You can check the current price of each memory version on the product page.

My Eclipse Cross already has wired CarPlay, is it worth changing?
If you use your phone a lot in the car, yes: you gain a wireless connection, a much more readable 9-inch screen and a GPS that works even when your phone is not connected.

Will I lose the steering wheel controls?
No. Thanks to the CAN Bus, volume, track skipping and calls keep working.

Can I keep the original camera if my car has one?
In many cases it can be reused, but it depends on the version. The kit includes a free reversing camera in case your car does not have one or you prefer to use the new one.

Does it affect the car's warranty?
The installation is plug & play and does not modify the original wiring, so the factory radio can be refitted if you ever need to.

Does it work with the 4WD version?
Yes. The drive system makes no difference: what matters is that the centre console matches the one in the photos.
