CarPlay Screen Radio for Mitsubishi ASX, Citroën C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 (2010-2019): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Mitsubishi ASX Citroen C4 Aircross Peugeot 4008 - CarPlay and Android Auto Screen Radio

The Mitsubishi ASX was one of the best-selling compact SUVs of its day, and its platform produced two twins wearing other badges: the Citroën C4 Aircross and the Peugeot 4008. All three share the same dashboard, radio aperture and wiring, so what works for one works for all three.

These are cars that still run perfectly and, looked after, last a long time. The weak point sits in the middle of the dashboard: the factory head unit is a 2 DIN with a tiny screen or no screen at all, with unusable navigation and Bluetooth that struggles with modern phones. Fitting an Android head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is the most cost-effective way to bring an ASX up to date without spending half the value of the car.

Does the Mitsubishi ASX have CarPlay as standard?

Not in the versions of this generation. What you may find, depending on trim and year, is:

  • A basic 2 DIN radio with a monochrome display, CD, USB and Bluetooth for calls. This is the most common setup on entry-level trims.
  • A built-in navigation system on higher trims, with maps that are no longer updated and an interface that feels painfully slow next to any current phone.
  • A small screen with an integrated reversing camera on some cars, which is the case to pay attention to when changing the head unit, because it is worth reusing that camera.

Mitsubishi did introduce its Smartphone Link Display Audio system with CarPlay on later versions of the range, but it is not something that can be added by software to an early ASX: the original unit simply lacks the hardware. The practical route is to replace the unit with a model-specific Android head unit.

The solution: an Android head unit for the ASX, C4 Aircross and 4008

The head unit designed for this platform comes with the fascia already built in and follows the line of the dashboard, with the climate controls and air vents left in place. It does not look like an add-on: it looks like it came from the factory.

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wired or wireless depending on the variant: Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, podcasts, dictated messages and calls on the screen.
  • Capacitive touchscreen with tempered glass and proper responsiveness, far better than the resistive panel of the original unit.
  • Full Android with the Play Store: from online radio apps to parking or fuel station finders.
  • Built-in GPS with offline maps, independent of your phone, useful on back roads and in areas with no coverage.
  • Rear and front camera inputs, with the option to reuse the original camera if your car already has one.
  • Bluetooth 5.0, FM/RDS, several USB ports, RCA output for an amplifier or subwoofer, and a DSP equaliser on the models that include it.
  • Steering wheel controls retained thanks to the CAN Bus adapter supplied in the kit.

Compatibility: supported versions

This unit fits all three platform siblings:

  • Mitsubishi ASX first generation, 2010 to 2019, in every trim and engine, petrol and diesel.
  • Citroën C4 Aircross, 2012 to 2017, which is the ASX with Citroën's front end and trim.
  • Peugeot 4008, 2012 to 2017, the third twin in the family.
  • Mitsubishi RVR in markets where it was sold under that name, with the same dashboard.

Check two details on your car before ordering. First, whether it has a factory reversing camera: if it does, tell us and we will specify the adapter needed to keep using it with the new screen. Second, whether your car has the Rockford Fosgate audio system with an amplifier, because in that case a specific harness is needed so you do not lose the rear speakers. With a photo of the dashboard and the current unit we can sort it out in a moment.

It is a plug & play installation, with no cutting or splicing of the original wiring. Between 40 and 60 minutes is normal.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a couple of minutes before you start.
  2. Remove the centre trim with a plastic tool. On the ASX the panel surrounding the radio and the climate controls unclips from the bottom upwards.
  3. Undo the four screws holding the original 2 DIN unit and pull it straight out.
  4. Disconnect the main connector, the aerial and, if present, the factory reversing camera cable.
  5. Connect the CAN Bus adapter between the original connector and the new head unit. This is what keeps the steering wheel controls, the ignition signal and reverse gear detection.
  6. Place the GPS aerial under the base of the windscreen and run the microphone to the A-pillar or next to the rear-view mirror.
  7. Seat the screen, screw it down, reconnect the battery and check sound on all four speakers, the steering wheel controls, GPS, Bluetooth and the camera with reverse gear engaged.

If after the installation the FM radio comes through noisy or drops stations, the reason is almost always the amplified aerial: it needs a powered adapter. It is a small part and easy to splice in.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Mitsubishi ASX?

The official network has no solution for this car. There is no CarPlay retrofit for the first-generation ASX, and the most they usually offer is updating the maps on the original navigation unit, which solves none of what you are after: you would still have no Google Maps, no Spotify and no WhatsApp by voice.

The model-specific Android head unit arrives complete in one box —screen, fascia, wiring and CAN Bus adapter— and it is a one-off cost. Fitted by you there is no labour, and at a workshop it is around an hour. Check the current price and the screen and memory variants on the product page.

My ASX already has a factory reversing camera. Do I lose it?
Not necessarily. With the right adapter the original camera connects to the new head unit's video input and still activates when you select reverse. Let us know when ordering and we will tell you which part you need.

Does the same head unit fit the Citroën C4 Aircross and the Peugeot 4008?
Yes. All three models share the platform and the dashboard, so the fascia and the wiring are identical. Only the badge on the bonnet changes.

Do the climate controls and the trip computer stay?
Yes. The climate control panel is a separate unit from the radio and is not touched. The trip information in the instrument cluster also stays exactly as it is.

Does wireless Android Auto work well, or is wired better?
Both work. Wireless is more convenient for short urban trips; wired is more stable and also charges the phone, which is what you want on long journeys with navigation running.

Do I lose the car's warranty by changing the head unit?
An ASX of this generation is already outside its factory warranty on age alone. And in any case, since no wiring is cut, the installation is completely reversible: you can refit the original radio whenever you like.
