The Mercedes M-Class W163 was the first SUV from the brand with the star and, two decades on, it is still a car with solid mechanicals, an enviable driving position and a towing capacity many modern SUVs cannot match. The problem is not the engine or the chassis: it is the dashboard. • On-board phone: some MLs came with phone pre-wiring, but with old Bluetooth profiles that will not even pair with a modern handset.

Even the Comand 2.0, the expensive option on the price list back then, cannot stream Bluetooth audio at decent quality today, cannot read USB sticks and relies on navigation discs that are no longer produced. That is why most ML owners end up using their phone on a suction mount, with the cable hanging down and the sound coming out of the handset speaker.

What is the installation like?

Fitting it in the W163 is one of the most rewarding jobs, because the M-Class radio slot is wide and easy to reach. It is a plug & play installation: no factory wires are cut or spliced.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes before you start.
2. Remove the centre console trim. On the W163 it is clipped in place; a plastic pry tool takes it off without marks.
3. Pull out the original unit. Depending on the system it will come out with extraction keys or by undoing the bracket screws.
4. Connect the supplied harness. The car's ISO and aerial connectors plug straight into the new radio's loom. This is also where the CAN Bus module goes, translating the car's signals: steering wheel controls, lighting, reverse gear and vehicle alerts.
5. Position the microphone and GPS aerial. The microphone near the rear-view mirror or the A-pillar; the GPS aerial on the dashboard, with a view of the windscreen.
6. Test before closing up. Reconnect the battery and check sound, touch response, steering wheel controls, CarPlay and, if you fit one, the reversing camera.
7. Fit the assembly and refit the trim.

A reasonably handy owner will do it in about 45-60 minutes. At a car audio shop it is roughly an hour of labour.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose the Bose sound in my ML if I change the radio?
No. The Bose amplifier keeps working; it is simply powered from the new unit through the corresponding adapter. In fact, with the Android head unit's equaliser many owners get a more balanced sound than with the original system.

Will the W163 steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus module takes care of translating those signals. If a button does not respond at first, the head unit lets you reassign functions manually from the settings menu.

My ML has Comand 2.0 with a colour screen. Does it still fit?
Yes. The head unit replaces the Comand assembly in the same slot. You lose the original CD navigation, but you swap it for Google Maps or Waze with live traffic, which is far more useful.

Can I use CarPlay wirelessly?
Yes, the higher-memory configurations handle wireless CarPlay and Android Auto comfortably. Even so, keeping a USB cable handy is a good idea: your phone charges while you navigate.

Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes, the unit has a camera input and detects reverse gear through the CAN Bus. In a vehicle the size of the ML it is probably the cheapest safety upgrade you can make.
