CarPlay Screen Radio for Mercedes C-Class W203 and CLK (2000-2009): how to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The Mercedes C-Class W203 is one of the most common Mercedes on European roads. The C 220 CDI, C 200 Kompressor and C 320 of that era are still going strong, with well-built interiors and engines that rack up serious mileage. The same goes for its coupé sibling, the CLK W209, which shares much of the electronics and the dashboard.

The weak point of both is infotainment. The Audio 10, Audio 20 and Comand 2.0 were decent units in their day, but today they only offer radio, CD and little else. No Apple CarPlay, no Android Auto and navigation whose maps are no longer updated. The good news: there is a model-specific Android screen that fits the factory opening and modernises the whole car without touching the rest of the interior.

Does the Mercedes C-Class W203 have CarPlay as standard?

No. Neither the W203 (2000-2007, plus the CLC Sportcoupé until 2011) nor the CLK W209 (2002-2009) ever left the factory with CarPlay or Android Auto: they predate those systems. Depending on trim and year you may have:

• Audio 10 CD: cassette or CD radio with a single-line monochrome display.
• Audio 20: CD radio with a small display and an optional CD changer in the boot.
• Comand 2.0: DVD navigation with a low-resolution colour screen and maps that are completely outdated today.
• Bluetooth only via the optional module and a specific cradle in the armrest — incompatible with any modern phone.
• Bose or Harman Kardon sound systems with an amplifier connected by fibre optics on the best-equipped versions.

What is the installation like?

It is a plug & play and reversible installation: it plugs into the car's original connector, without cutting cables.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the original radio. On the W203 you use DIN extraction keys that slide into the four holes on the front of the unit.
3. Disconnect the ISO/Quadlock connectors, the aerial and the fibre optics if present.
4. Connect the new screen's harness and the CAN Bus decoder, which keeps the steering wheel controls and the car's signals working.
5. If the car has a fibre-optic amplifier, insert the optical decoder between the harness and the MOST ring to recover the sound.
6. Install the microphone next to the rear-view mirror or on the A-pillar and hide the cable in the trim.
7. Fit the adapter frame and slot the screen into the opening.
8. Reconnect the battery, start the car and pair your phone. From then on, CarPlay connects on its own.

An experienced installer usually takes one to two hours, depending on whether the optical decoder and a camera also have to be fitted.

On the Mercedes side there is no official update that adds CarPlay to a W203: the brand never offered that retrofit for this generation. The classic alternatives were updating the Comand map DVDs — expensive, and the maps age just the same — or replacing the unit with a second-hand one, which still gives you neither Google Maps nor Spotify. Buying the model-specific screen and fitting it, with or without a workshop, is the cheapest option and the only one that really brings the car up to date.

My W203 has Bose/Harman Kardon sound — will I lose my speakers?
No, as long as you add the fibre-optic decoder. That module translates the new screen's signal into the original amplifier's optical ring and keeps all the speakers working.

Do the steering wheel controls still work?
Yes. The included CAN Bus decoder keeps volume, track skip and call handling working from the steering wheel.

Does it also fit the CLK W209 and the Sportcoupé?
Yes. The CLK W209 and the CL203/CLC variants share the radio opening and the basic wiring of the W203, so the screen fits all of them.

Can I put the original radio back?
Yes. No car cable is cut: you simply remove the screen and plug the factory unit back in.

Do I need an internet connection to navigate?
With CarPlay or Android Auto you use your phone's data. The screen also supports WiFi and, in the 4G versions, its own SIM card if you prefer not to depend on the phone.
