Which Mazdas come with CarPlay as standard?

These are the systems you will find depending on the age of the car:

• CD radio with a monochrome display: the one in early Mazda 3, 5 and 6. Radio, CD and basic hands-free at best. No phone projection.
• NB1 navigation: the system with TomTom map data on an SD card that the brand fitted in the middle period. It works, but the maps stopped being current a long time ago.
• MZD Connect: the raised screen on the dashboard operated with the rotary commander on the console. It is the most modern system in the range and, depending on the year and the car, it supported CarPlay by cable only and after a paid upgrade.
• Entry trim levels: in fleets and leasing cars the simplest radio in the catalogue is common, with no navigation of any kind.

If your Mazda is in any of these cases and you want wireless CarPlay, the clean route is the specific screen.

What is the installation like on a Mazda?

It is a plug & play job using the car's own connectors:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before taking anything apart.
2. Release the console trim with a plastic tool, without levering with metal screwdrivers.
3. Remove the original unit by undoing the fixing screws and unplug power, speakers, aerial and USB.
4. Connect the specific harness from the screen to those same connectors, with no cutting or splicing.
5. Plug in the CAN-BUS module: this is the part that keeps the steering wheel controls, the sensors and the car's warnings on the new screen.
6. Fit the microphone next to the mirror and, if you are adding a camera, run the cable to the tailgate along the roof trim.
7. Check everything before closing up: audio, wireless CarPlay, GPS, camera and controls.

Between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the model. It comes with a manual and with WhatsApp support while you do it.

How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a Mazda?

At the dealer, the official route for compatible MZD Connect cars is a paid upgrade that adds CarPlay by cable only, and which is not available for earlier models. For those, the workshop's only alternative is replacing the unit, adding head unit, trim, harness, steering control adapter and labour.

Frequently asked questions

I have MZD Connect. Is the new screen worth it?
It depends on what you are after. If you want wireless CarPlay, Android with the Play Store and a larger touchscreen, then yes: the official upgrade stops at wired CarPlay.

Does the rotary commander on the console still work?
The new screen is a touchscreen and takes over operating the system. The steering wheel controls are kept via the CAN-BUS module, and those are what you actually use while driving.

Do I lose the parking sensors?
No. They keep working and their warnings are shown on the new screen.

Does the same screen fit a 2010 Mazda 6 and a 2015 one?
No: console and connectors change between generations. That is why each product page states the exact year range.

Can I add a reversing camera?
Yes, every screen comes with a video input ready for it. On the CX-5, CX-7 and CX-9 it is one of the most noticeable upgrades.

Will it pass the roadworthiness test?
Yes. It goes in the original aperture and does not alter any safety component, so no type approval is required.
