CarPlay Screen for the BMW 5 Series F10 and F11 (2011-2018): How to Install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

The BMW 5 Series F10 and its F11 Touring sibling are still, years later, superb cars in terms of ride quality and composure. What has aged is the infotainment: the 6.5" or 8.8" screen with iDrive was a benchmark in its day, but today it feels small, slow next to any phone and, above all, without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. BMW did not offer that integration on most cars of this generation, and the ones that did get it arrived very late and with CarPlay only.

The alternative is not to tear the dashboard apart. There is a model-specific 10.25" or 12.3" screen for the F10/F11 that takes the place of the original display, respects the dashboard lines and adds CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the factory iDrive.

Does the BMW 5 Series F10 have CarPlay as standard?

In practice, almost never. This generation used two different systems:

• iDrive CIC, on the earlier cars: 6.5" or 8.8" screen, Business or Professional navigation, with no smartphone integration whatsoever.
• iDrive NBT, from the facelift onwards: a faster interface, improved graphics and BMW Apps, but with a closed list of applications. CarPlay as an option only reached the last series and always with a cable; Android Auto never arrived at all.

The result is that most F10 and F11 cars on the road navigate with maps you have to pay to update and cannot use Waze, Google Maps or Spotify on screen. A shame, because the rest of the car is still perfectly up to the job.

The solution: an Android screen for the BMW 5 Series F10 and F11

This is not a generic double-DIN radio: it is a module designed for this dashboard, with the right frame and curvature, that replaces the original display and draws on the car's own connectors. What you gain:

Compatibility with the 5 Series F10 and F11: supported versions

The unit covers the BMW 5 Series F10/F11 generation between 2011 and 2018:

• F10 saloon: 518d, 520d, 525d, 530d, 535d, 520i, 528i, 535i and the xDrive variants.
• F11 Touring, with the same dashboard.

What is the installation like?

It is a careful installation, but with no cutting or soldering:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes for the electronics to discharge.
2. Remove the original display housing: it is held by clips and screws, and you need plastic tools to avoid marking the dashboard.
3. Unplug the display connector and the LVDS cable that carries the video signal from the control unit.
4. Insert the new screen's harness: it is plug & play on the factory connectors, including the CAN Bus line that keeps iDrive and the steering wheel controls without any diagnostic coding.
5. Place the GPS aerial under the dashboard, with a view of the windscreen.
6. Connect the camera, if you are fitting one, to the matching video input.
7. Test with everything still apart: system start-up, switching between iDrive and Android, audio, steering wheel controls and phone pairing.
8. Fit the screen onto its bracket and close up the trim.

An installer with BMW experience does it in one to two hours. How much does it cost to add CarPlay to a BMW 5 Series F10?

There is no sensible official route: on most cars there is no approved CarPlay retrofit, and where one exists it means replacing the multimedia control unit, coding it and paying main-dealer labour. On a car of this age the quote rarely makes sense.
