A Range Rover Evoque, a Discovery or a Jaguar XF from these years still have real presence: fine materials, good insulation and a driving position that has lost none of its appeal. But switch on the screen and the decade shows: the InControl menu or the Denso navigation responds with a lag, maps are bought at the dealer and the phone is only good for Bluetooth calls.

On these cars, ripping out the original screen and replacing it with an Android radio is not a good idea: the dashboard is designed around that screen, with aluminium or wood trims that would be marked forever. The right solution is different: a CarPlay and Android Auto interface that connects behind the scenes and projects CarPlay onto the screen you already have, leaving the interior exactly as it left the factory.

Do Land Rovers and Jaguars from these years have CarPlay as standard?

No. Through those years the Land Rover and Jaguar range used systems born before CarPlay and Android Auto existed:

• Denso navigation with a 7" touchscreen, common on the Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover Sport and early Jaguar XF.
• InControl Touch, with hard-disk maps and a more modern but closed interface.
• InControl Touch Pro, with a large screen and connected navigation, which still did not include CarPlay until well into its commercial life.

The solution: CarPlay and Android Auto interface

The interface is a small module that sits between the multimedia unit and the car's screen. When you want the original system, it is there untouched; when you want CarPlay, you switch source and it appears full screen. Nothing is cut and nothing shows from outside.

The big advantage over changing the radio is the look and the resale value: an Evoque or a Jaguar with its original screen and working CarPlay is worth more than one with a generic screen forced into the dashboard.

What is the installation like?

It is a plug & play installation behind the screen, with no cables cut and no dashboard modified.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start.
2. Remove the trim around the screen with a plastic pry tool, taking care not to mark the aluminium or wood.
3. Take out the screen or the multimedia unit depending on the model, undoing its screws and pulling straight out.
4. Disconnect the LVDS video cable and the screen's power connector.
5. Insert the interface in between: the car's LVDS cable goes into the module and the supplied cable runs from the module to the screen.
6. Connect the power supply and the CAN Bus cable to the designated connector: this is what lets the interface recognise the steering wheel controls and the screen's touch input.
7. Tuck the module into the free space behind the console, secured with cable ties so it does not rattle.
8. Reconnect the battery, pair your phone and check the source switch between the original system and CarPlay before refitting the trims.

Switching between the factory menu and CarPlay is done with a long press on a steering wheel button or on the screen itself, depending on the model. If you would rather delegate it, a car electronics installer will fit it in an hour to an hour and a half.

• Jaguar Land Rover dealer: on most cars there is no option to add CarPlay. Where it exists, it means replacing the multimedia module and comfortably passing 0.
• Factory navigation map update: between and each time, and you still have no CarPlay and no apps.

Do I still see the parking camera when I select reverse?
Yes. The factory camera image takes priority and appears just as before, wherever you are inside CarPlay.

Does it leave a trace if I want to remove it?
None. As no cable is cut, you unplug the module, plug the original cable back in and the car is exactly as it was.
